      (Newser) - When the GPS in his rental car told him to turn right as was driving over a railroad crossing, a New York area driver obediently followed directions—right onto the tracks. The car got stuck and he abandoned it minutes before a train slammed into it. No one was hurt, but the driver will be billed for the damages. More »

      (Newser) - At least 41 people were killed early today when the Karachi Express derailed, and Pakistani rescue workers were scrambling to pull survivors from the twisted wreckage, CNN reports. Over 135 people were injured when 12 of the train's 17 cars overturned. Over a thousand people were on the train, many of them heading home for the Eid holiday. More »

      (Newser) - At least five passengers were killed early today when a bomb exploded beneath a packed passenger train in trouble-wracked northeast India, AP reports. The bomb tore through the luggage car of the Rajdhani Express traveling to New Delhi from Assam state.  A little known militant group claimed responsibility for the attack.   More »

      30 Hurt in Amtrak Crash

      (Newser) - Five were critically injured when an Amtrak passenger train rammed a stopped freight train in Chicago today, the Chicago Tribune reports. Nine more were seriously hurt, including five Amtrak workers, and another 30 suffered minor injuries. Officials, who freed some workers from the locomotive with hydraulic cutting tools, expect the toll will rise to 50 by the end of the day. More »

      Korea Chiefs to Launch Border-Busting Railway

      (Newser) - In their latest step toward closer ties, the leaders of North and South Korea have agreed to establish a cross-border train system to strengthen economic connections. Beginning in December freight trains will follow a 16-mile track through the heavily patrolled border frontier to a joint industrial complex in North Korea's Kaesong. Two dozen South Korean companies employ some 20,000 North Koreans in the factory complex. More »

      (Newser) - French rail workers tested Sarkozy's mettle today by walking off the job in defense of their pensions, the BBC reports. Only 90 of France's 700 high-speed trains will run tomorrow and subway service in Paris will be dead, according to the metro operator.
