      (Newser) - A volcano erupted in southwestern Colombia last night, lighting up the night sky with lava and throwing volcanic ash miles into the sky. The mayor ordered the evacuation of the 8,000 or so people who live near Mount Galeras, but one seismologist said that most of the city is not in danger.       (Newser) - An 5.6-magnitude earthquake rumbled through the Bay Area last night, lasting up to 15 seconds and causing tremors as far north as Eugene, Ore. The San Francisco Chronicle reports that the quake, the largest since the devastating 6.9 quake in 1989, caused only small disruptions—but raises fears of a larger quake along the treacherous Hayward Fault.       (Newser) - At least eight people were missing early today after a volcano erupted on an island off Yemen, shooting smoking lava hundreds of feet into the air and turning the sky black.  A Canadian ship in a nearby NATO fleet was participating in a search-and-rescue operation in a hunt for the missing, believed to be at sea.       (Newser) - Major earthquakes rattled Guam and New Zealand last night but no major damage or injuries were reported. A 6.8 quake off the coast swayed high-rise buildings and knocked goods off supermarket shelves in Guam. Hours later the uninhabited Auckland Islands south of the New Zealand mainland were struck by a 7.3 magnitude quake. More »

      (Newser) - The fourth in a string of violent earthquakes and more than 60 lower-level tremors rattled Indonesia late today, at a magnitude of 6.2. With its epicenter two miles deep in the Indian Ocean, 65 miles west-northwest of Bengkulu, the government issued, then canceled, another tsunami warning.       (Newser) - A 7.5-magnitude aftershock has rocked Indonesia, sparking a new tsunami alert and making buildings sway in nearby Singapore.       (Newser) - The CEO of a collapsed Utah mine claimed that ongoing “seismic and tectonic activity”  curbed yesterday’s attempts at rescuing 6 miners who remain trapped 1,500 feet underground. He told CNN that the rescue dig won't resume until this afternoon and that the miners won't be reached for at least a week, although their condition will be known in 48 to 72 hours. More »
