Sarah Palin has accomplished a lot and has brought unexpected recognition to Alaska, but for the presidency, Barack Obama is "a clear choice" for the Anchorage Daily News . John McCain has abandoned his maverick positions to curry conservative favor, and the demands of the White House would "stretch the governor beyond her range," the paper says.

Many of Sarah Palin’s critics have something in common: They haven't met her. Virtually everyone who has come into the governor’s presence leaves impressed, writes Fred Barnes of the Weekly Standard. Even Alaska politicians she’s quarreled with say she’s smart and capable. “Her politics aren’t my politics,” said SNL ’s Lorne Michaels, but meeting her, “you can see she’s a very powerful, very disciplined, incredibly gracious woman.”

St. Louis Blues goalie Manny Legace is sitting out tonight's game with a hip injury after a brush with politics, the AP reports. The team rolled a carpet out onto the ice for Sarah Palin to drop a ceremonial puck before last night's Kings game and Legace, the first player onto the ice, tripped right over it. The Blues lost 4-0 but Legace says he won't penalize Palin by holding a grudge.

The life of a stylist is all about communication. When Sarah Palin appeared on Saturday Night Live , the show's designer had to convince her to scrap her fancy new clothes and instead dress the way she used to—in essence, to dress as the character of Sarah Palin as played by Tina Fey rather than the new (and more expensive) version of herself, Women’s Wear Daily reports.

Sarah Palin has touted herself as a reformer, telling voters she "took on the old politics as usual in Juneau." But an LA Times investigation shows the Alaska governor gave more than 100 state jobs to campaign contributors and their relatives, many of whom lacked qualifications for the positions. One controversial appointee received a note from a Palin aide that read, "Well now your foot's back in the door."

Even if she doesn't end up in Washington, Sarah Palin could still find a presence in the lower 48, the Hollywood Reporter notes. Media higher-ups, salivating at the thought of ratings bumps that Palin appearances gave Saturday Night Live and CBS News, would love to offer her a backup career—with talk shows, news commentary or even a reality gig among the possible pitches.

While no more Saks and Barney's charges have surfaced, records for the first 2 weeks of October indicate that Sarah Palin's makeup artist was the highest paid individual contributor to the McCain campaign effort, pulling in $23,000. Amy Strozzi easily beat out McCain's foreign policy adviser (just $12,500) and senior communications staffer ($12,000), reports the New York Times .

Those close to Sarah Palin as she was growing up remember her as quiet and reserved—“almost a wallflower type,” said one friend, a far cry from the tough, outspoken campaigner she has become. “I don’t think Sarah ever wanted to lead,” notes a college buddy. But somewhere between high school basketball, beauty pageants, a sportscasting job, and the Wasilla City Council, something changed, the New York Times reports in a profile.

For Kathleen Parker, it’s suddenly clear why John McCain picked Sarah Palin. Parker's husband called it first, then a male friend confessed, “I’m sexually attracted to her. I don’t care that she knows nothing.” Robert Draper’s much-discussed New York Times magazine piece notes that McCain’s first real meeting with Palin was a cozy talk down by a creek and a sycamore tree. “One does not have to be a psychoanalyst to reckon that McCain was smitten," says Parker.

She noted her ticket’s plan to add $3 billion per year for special ed, saying the money will come from “re-prioritizing" the budget. She denied that the GOP spent $150,000 on clothing and accessories for her, saying, "That is not who we are."

Conservative commentators who shamelessly jump on the Barack Obama bandwagon are blinkered to the new face of conservatism, Tony Blankley writes in the Washington Times . Just like “me-too” Republicans of the New Deal era, “they all cast their admiration for Mr. Obama in contrast to Sarah Palin—who they mischaracterize through a process of intellectual and historic dishonesty tempered by cultural snobbery and fear.”

The Alaska governor's flashy signature 'do is a surprise hit with Orthodox Jewish women in Brooklyn, where the "Sarah Palin Wig" has been selling briskly—at $695 a pop—to women who keep their hair covered for religious reasons. “It's a very classic look, yet fashion forward,” the owner of the shop that carries them tells the Jewish Forward . About 50 Palin wigs, made with real hair, have been sold since John McCain named his VP, the AP reports.

John McCain’s campaign has gone through a dizzying number of narratives, as Robert Draper outlines in the New York Times . Draper looks inside a dysfunctional operation driven by two quarreling old McCain friends (Rick Davis and speechwriter Mark Salter), and the Rovian outsider who reconciled them (Steve Schmidt). The troika has engineered at least six separate messages because, one insider said, “we still couldn’t answer the question ‘Why elect John McCain?’”

The outrage over Sarah Palin’s pricey wardrobe doesn’t extend to professional fashionistas, Politico reports—putting money into a candidate’s appearance is a perfectly wise use of funds, they argue. “You are talking about branding a person who you are launching into the public eye,” said one San Francisco stylist. “If you are looking the part, you are halfway there.”

The $150,000 pricetag for Sarah Palin's new clothes has transformed the hockey mom into something of an empress, the New York Times reports, and GOP strategists are sweating the change in image. As the campaign enters the homestretch, Palin's unplain threads have become a symbol of excess akin to John McCain's seven homes or John Edwards' $400 haircuts—undermining the appeal to Joe Sixpack she's staked her candidacy on.

Tina Fey's portrayal of Sarah Palin as a bubblehead is way off, the candidate tells People magazine in a joint interview with hubby Todd. Sarah Palin apparently isn't kidding when she stresses the importance of lipstick to a hockey mom: the RNC spent $5000 on hair and makeup en route to racking up a $150,000 bill for clothing and accessories for Palin and her family since John McCain picked her as his runningmate. The $75,000 dropped at Neiman Marcus, among other spending sprees, have raised legal issues, but the RNC defends its expenditures, Politico reports.
