Will moderation or extremism triumph in this bellwether nation?

Pakistan is one of the Islamic world's hottest hotbeds of fundamentalism. But it's also a country with an almost entirely secular (if mildly autocratic) government, headed by strongman Pervez Musharraf, who faces acerbic opposition both from reformers on his left and fundamentalist clerics on his right, and has struggled to preserve an uneasy friendship with the United States by promising to root out terrorism. The December assassination of Benazir Bhutto only adds to the country's unrest, postponing elections that a top Bhutto aide charges were "thoroughly rigged."

      US Ground Forces Raid Pakistan Outposts

      (Newser) - American commandos raided al-Qaeda encampments inside Pakistan yesterday, the New York Times reports. The US has carried out air strikes in the region before but this is the first acknowledged ground raid inside Pakistan's border with Afghanistan, long suspected of being the hideout of Osama Bin Laden.       Pakistan PM Escapes Convoy Attack

      (Newser) - Three days before Pakistan is to elect a new president, PM Yousuf Gilani escaped an assassination attempt on his caravan outside Islamabad, the BBC reports. No injuries were reported, officials said, citing “robust and comprehensive security measures,” but CNN reports it's unclear whether Gilani was present in the motorcade. Gilani was on his way to Rawalpindi, a military town where former PM Benazir Bhutto was assassinated in December. More »

      Pakistan's Sharif Faces Charges of Corruption

      (Newser) - Nawaz Sharif, whose party recently pulled out of Pakistan's ruling coalition, is about to face corruption charges, Pakistani prosecutors said today. A two-time prime minister whom Pervez Musharraf deposed in 1999, Sharif will be charged with money laundering and loan defaults, as well as "the accumulation of wealth beyond his known sources of income."
