      MySpace Will Transmit Blunt

MySpace will host and sell videos of exclusive musical performances on its MySpace Music site, reports the New York Times . Artists will record a series of exclusive videos for the site, and will be able to set their own prices, unlike Apple's iTunes flat-rate prices. The system, called Transmissions, won't require users to leave MySpace, as an earlier, failed system did. More »

Bad Lip-Lock Is Kiss of Death

You must remember this: A kiss isn't just a kiss. If it's bad, it can actually kill a budding relationship, a new survey says. Some 59% of men and 66% of women said they've had the hots for someone—until that first, deadly kiss, CNN reports. "I knew this girl I'll call Big Tongue," recalls one luckless dater. "She was very forceful with it, and I started choking." More »

No Charges in Cyberbullying Suicide Case

No charges will be filed in the cyberbullying case that led a young girl to commit suicide, Wired reports. Facebook Court Defeat May Presage a Fall

Facebook has been handed a defeat in its attempts to censor the independent Harvard alumni magazine 02138 , which published confidential court documents relating to founder Mark Zuckerberg's earlier work for a rival site. That's a good thing, says Kara Swisher of the Wall Street Journal , for whom the attempted injunction was "essentially a legal temper tantrum." More »

$$$ Thrown at Buzz Drive Facebook's Beacon Plans

Facebook's efforts to fix its Beacon system show that talk isn't cheap, as marketers increasingly are finding it’s a great way to spread the word about their product. Word-of-mouth advertising has taken off, with nearly $981 million being spent on campaigns last year, a 36% increase from 2005, reports Ars Technica. Companies are now integrating WoM into every campaign. More »

      Facebook Backs Off Beacon

Facebook has watered down its unpopular Beacon ad platform, which "shared" information about users' online shopping habits with everyone in their Facebook network—without their permission. Now, instead of making users opt out every time they make a purchase if they don't want it to be broadcast, Facebook will only broadcast the transaction if user click "ok."  More »

      Your Log-in Please, Sir?

The super-rich are joining the social networking craze, but they're certainly not going to mix with the masses on MySpace. Invitation-only site aSmallWorld.net has proven popular—some say too popular.      More »

      Privacy, Shmivacy: Facebook Is Doomed

Aggressive new advertising tactics make Facebook look more evil by the day, but don’t worry, InformationWeek columnist Cory Doctorow writes, because it’s doomed anyway. Sure social networks are “pure crack” for some, but sooner or later everyone gets friended by someone they’d rather avoid, and eventually that awkwardness is too much to bear. More »

New Trend May Have Fans Shout, 'I Want My ITV!'

MTV just may become a thing of the past, thanks to a new wave sweeping the Net called “interactive video.” Encouraged by the popularity of music videos online, but frustrated by poor web quality, producers are allowing users to create their own video-viewing experience. Indie favorite Arcade Fire released their new single by letting fans click through the band’s clips. More »

      Networking Teens Risk Identity Theft

Millions of young users of social networking sites are risking identity theft because of information shared online, warns a UK study reported in the Independent today. Anger Brews Over Cyber Suicide

Police fear a "mob mentality" is brewing in a St. Louis suburb after a 13-year-old girl killed herself, and the hoaxers who allegedly prodded her have gone free. Two adults—parents of the girl's friend—badgered Megan Meier online until she hanged herself in her closet last October. Cops say they've been getting angry calls since the story broke last week, but insist that no law can corral the cyber-bullies. More »

Techno Savvy Teens Turn Backs on Email

If snail mail is going the way of the dodo, then it looks like, among teenagers, email is going the way of, well, the snail: half of all teens prefer instant messaging to old-fashioned emails; and while overall use increased six percent last year, e-missives among the "Facebook generation" dropped by eight percent, Slate reports. New VC Fund Wants Only Facebook Apps

Not only is Lorenzen investing in a month-and-a-half-old industry, last month at a conference he said Facebook might be worth $100 billion, more than six times the $15 billion valuation that came with Microsoft's purchase of a 1.6% stake. Facebook to Join Google's 'OpenSocial' Alliance?

The day after MySpace announced it was joining a Google-led alliance meant to let applications written for one social networking site be used on others, it looks like lone outsider Facebook could join up, too. That's according to Fortune Magazine , which reported that Facebook and Google representatives met yesterday and that a board member said Facebook is open to the OpenSocial standard. More »

MySpace May Join Google Social Project

Tech bloggers are buzzing about a rumored partnership between MySpace and Google’s about-to-be-launched OpenSocial project; a big reveal may come as soon as today. Though it still leads Facebook in membership and traffic, the social networker has lost much of its spotlight recently—and CNet’s Caroline McCarthy says the deal is likely a good move for MySpace owner News Corp.
