The Abortion Debate

More than three decades after Roe, consensus still eludes

It’s back—one of the most divisive issues in America. A recent 5-4 Supreme Court decision that bans certain late-term abortions is the first limit the court has allowed since Roe v. Wade legalized abortion in 1973. But the issue is no longer the ultimate liberal-conservative litmus test. Many liberals now support some restrictions on late-term abortion, while some conservatives have moved toward a more libertarian stance on the issue. And even as pundits declare that the pendulum is swinging back to the middle in the US, some traditional Catholic countries are moving in the other direction, liberalizing access to abortion after years of absolute bans.

If Roe Goes, States May Ban Cross-Border Abortions

(Newser) - If John McCain wins and puts conservatives on the Supreme Court, not only could Roe v. Wade go down—states may prohibit women from crossing state lines for abortions, Linda Hirshman writes in the Washington Post . Past rulings and Constitutional interpretations don't clearly support such laws, but times have changed since 1972, and many top legal minds "believe that this is something states probably can do," writes Hirshman. Teen Abortion Rate Drops; Not So With Adults

(Newser) - US teenagers are having fewer abortions than ever before, but their adult counterparts can’t say the same, Newsweek reports. According to a new, nonpartisan study, teen abortions have fallen almost 30% over the past 30 years, as millions of dollars were pumped into sex-education programs. But women aged 20-29 have seen much smaller declines, and still see rates above 1974 levels. More »

Google previously banned pro-lifers from placing ads opposite abortion-related search terms, but a British group sued the company for violating activists’ free speech rights. Says one group member: The Christian Institute “is not a group of headbangers and would set out its position in a pretty factual, pretty sensible way.” More »

Dems Again Losing Catholics Over Abortion

(Newser) - Though progressive Catholics have worked hard to convince churchgoers that the Democrats share the church's views on the Iraq war, immigration, and health care, abortion is again turning Catholic voters away from the party, the New York Times reports. As conservative bishops have scolded Catholics like Nancy Pelosi and Joe Biden for contradicting the church's teachings, liberals are facing a setback. More »

Paglia Loves Palin's 'Annie Oakley' Feminism

(Newser) - Sarah Palin represents “an explosion of a brand-new style of muscular American feminism,” writes Camille Paglia on Salon. After Barack Obama’s convention speech, Paglia assumed the election was over. "Hoary, barnacle-encrusted“ McCain seemed unthinkable as president. Then came the Palin pick, and "the biggest step forward in feminism since Madonna channeled Marlene Dietrich." More »

How Did Dems Inherit Ozzie & Harriet Mantle?

(Newser) - The enthusiastic evangelical reaction to a working mother with an unwed pregnant teenage daughter on the GOP ticket highlights the dramatically changing face of conservative Christian America and could spell trouble for the Dems, Hanna Rosin writes in Slate . Evangelicals now actually score worse than the rest of America on the traditional values that preachers and conservative pundits laud, with families often failing to resemble the "oh-so-perfect" Obamas. (Newser) - The culture wars are heating up again, thanks to Sarah Palin’s staunch opposition to abortion and demonstrated fondness for firearms, Politico reports. Social issues have been largely absent from the campaign so far, with both candidates preferring to focus on the war and the economy. But Palin’s own pregnancy (and her daughter’s) are forcing McCain and Obama to address the issues head on. More »
