      Henderson, Rice Headed to Cooperstown

      (Newser) - Rickey Henderson and Jim Rice have been elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame, MLB reports today. Henderson, often cited as the best leadoff hitter ever, was considered a shoe-in, and captured 94.8% of votes in his first year on the ballot. Rice, a Boston stalwart, squeaked in with 76.4% of the vote in his final year of eligibility. The cutoff is 75%. More »

      Maddux Will Hang 'Em Up: 'I'm Getting Too Old'

      (Newser) - Four-time Cy Young winner Greg Maddux confirmed today that his 355th win was his last, the Las Vegas Sun reports. “I’m 42, and I have two kids and a wife,” said the eight-time all-star, who finished his 23-year career with a stint on the Los Angeles Dodgers. "I’m getting too old, and my kids are getting too old. It’s a combination of those two.” He plans to retire publicly in Las Vegas on Monday. More »

      (Newser) - The most prolific hitting catcher of all-time is hanging up his spikes. After 16 years, Mike Piazza is calling it a career, one that saw him amass a .308 lifetime batting average and 427 homeruns; 396 of those dingers came as a catcher, which is the most all time, reports AP. "It has been an amazing journey,” said the 12-time All-Star. More »

      (Newser) - Ryan Dempster struck out a career-high 12 and hit a go-ahead single against Greg Maddux during a four-run fifth inning, leading the Chicago Cubs over the punchless Padres 4-0.       Braves Beat Padres 5-4, Complete 6-0 Homestand

      (Newser) - The Atlanta Braves finally won a one-run game when Matt Diaz hit a bases-loaded single in the ninth to beat the San Diego Padres 5-4. Atlanta was the first team since the 2000 Houston Astros to lose its first nine one-run games. The Braves were the only team in the major leagues without such a victory. More »

      (Newser) - Chipper Jones hit his 10th homer, Jair Jurrjens pitched six strong innings and the Atlanta Braves beat the San Diego Padres 5-3 to improve the NL's best home record. Mark Kotsay added two hits, including a homer. Kotsay also delivered the defensive play of the game in the fifth inning, making an over-the-shoulder catch at the warning track of Tadahito Iguchi's drive. More »

      (Newser) - When Greg Maddux left in the sixth inning, he walked off the mound and headed directly for the clubhouse, bypassing the San Diego Padres' dugout.       (Newser) - Dan Uggla hit two home runs, Mark Hendrickson pitched seven effective innings and the Florida Marlins beat the San Diego Padres 6-4 on Friday. Uggla's second homer, a three-run shot off Justin Germano that traveled over the left-field scoreboard, was followed by a homer from Luis Gonzalez.       (Newser) - Ryan Howard hit a tiebreaking solo homer in the eighth inning to lift the Philadelphia Phillies over the San Diego Padres 3-2 on Thursday last night. Tom Gordon (3-2) pitched a perfect eighth and Brad Lidge retired the side in the ninth for his seventh save in as many chances. Lidge hasn't allowed an earned run in 12 innings this season. More »

      (Newser) - Brandon Webb outpitched Jake Peavy in a battle of the last two NL Cy Young Award winners, leading the Arizona Diamondbacks to a 2-1 victory over the San Diego Padres on Sunday. Webb allowed just one unearned run and twice escaped bases-loaded jams before leaving after six innings. He’s the majors’ first six-game winner and now has a 1.98 ERA. More »
