      (Newser) - The New York Yankees' $1.5 billion valuation lands them solidly in the top spot in the Forbes ranking of baseball's most valuable teams. The crosstown Mets came second, trailing by almost $600 million. The Yanks, however, were one of only two teams to lose money last season, dropping $3.7 million.       Phillies Announcer Kalas Dead at 73

      (Newser) - Harry Kalas, who announced Philadelphia Phillies games since 1971, died today, the Inquirer reports. Kalas, 73, was found unconscious at Nationals Stadium in Washington and rushed to a hospital, where he died. Kalas, a Hall of Famer, underwent unspecified surgery earlier this year. “We lost Harry today,” the team president said. “We lost our voice.” More »

      Pitcher Schilling Retires at 42

      (AP) - Red Sox pitcher Curt Schilling says he's retiring from baseball. The 42-year-old right-hander who won World Series championships with Arizona and Boston announced on his blog today that he's leaving after 23 years with "zero regrets." Schilling missed all of last season with a shoulder injury. For his career, he has the 14th-most strikeouts in baseball history. He leaves with a 216-146 record and 3.46 earned-run average. More »

      Cardinals' Pujols Wins Second NL MVP Award

      (Newser) - Albert Pujols of the St. Louis Cardinals won the National League’s Most Valuable Player award today, the Post-Dispatch reports, taking the honor for the second time despite missing a significant portion of the season due to injury. The first baseman hit .357 with 37 home runs and 116 RBI. Ryan Howard, who led the majors with 48 homers and 146 RBI for the World Series champion Philadelphia Phillies, took second. More »

      Philly Celebrates Phillies

      (Newser) - Hundreds of thousands lined the streets of Philadelphia this afternoon to celebrate the Phillies' World Series victory. Under clear, sunny skies, the city's famously ill-tempered fans were ebullient and well-behaved, the AP reports. “It's like Christmas came two months early,” manager Charlie Manuel said. Added pitcher Jamie Moyer, who attended the team's only other World Series victory celebration in 1980 as a truant teen: “Today tops it by far.” More »

      (Newser) - The Philadelphia Phillies edged Tampa Bay 4-3 tonight to capture the team's first World Series pennant since 1980. Pedro Feliz singled home Eric Bruntlett in the bottom of the seventh to break a 3-3 tie and provide the winning run, the Tampa Bay Tribune reports.       (Newser) - Baseball weather, it's not. When the World Series resumes tonight in Philly, the forecast calls for temperatures in the 30s and a wind chill below freezing, MSNBC reports.       (Newser) - A forecast of high winds, heavy rain, and even snow in Philadelphia tonight moved Major League Baseball to push the conclusion of Game 5 of the World Series until at least tomorrow, NBC10 reports. “While obviously we want to finish Game 5 as soon as possible, the forecast for today does not allow for us to continue the game this evening,” commissioner Bud Selig said.       (Newser) - Torrential rain in Philadelphia forced the suspension of tonight's World Series Game 5 midway through the sixth inning with the Tampa Bay Rays and the Phillies tied at 2. Carlos Pena tied the score on a two-out RBI single before Evan Longoria lined out and the umpiring crew called for the tarp.       (AP) - It took a while, but the Phillies finally beat Tampa Bay in the wee hours to take a 2-1 lead in the World Series. Carlos Ruiz hit an infield single—a trickler down the third-base line—with the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth as Philly outlasted the Rays, 5-4. The game didn't begin until 10:06pm because of a rain delay, and it didn't end until 1:47am. Ruiz, Chase Utley, and Ryan Howard homered for the Phils. More »
