      (Newser) - Chicago’s historic Holy Name Cathedral has gaping holes in its roof as a result of this morning’s fire, and suffered significant water damage, the Sun-Times reports. With the fire extinguished, crews started pumping water out of the 134-year-old Gothic revival structure. Priests and nuns who were inside escaped safely, but a firefighter was slightly injured.       (AP) - Firefighters battled an early morning blaze in frigid temperatures today day at Holy Name Cathedral, a 134-year-old Chicago landmark and the seat of Cardinal Francis George. Flames shot through the church's roof for about an hour before they were replaced by plumes of white smoke. The fire appeared to have been burning for a while when discovered, but there were no injuries. More »

The billionaire Ricketts family is the winning bidder to buy the baseball team from Sam Zell's Tribune Co. The $900 million deal isn't sealed yet—other baseball owners must approve, for one thing—but it's expected to be complete before spring training in April. The attackers opened fire from an SUV last night as a basketball game at Dunbar High School was ending. Witnesses say the gunmen pretended to fire before shooting into a crowd of students.
