Donald Trump's 92-story Chicago tower has been hit by a triple-whammy of the credit crunch, the housing slump, and sagging retail sales, making foreclosure a real danger, the Wall Street Journal reports. Trump, who developed the tower without partners, owes $1 billion on the project but has so far sold only $600 million in condo units and condo-hotel units. He's looking for an extension on a key loan due this Saturday.

The longest-serving Supreme Court justice may defy expectations and stay on the bench even if fellow Chicagoan Barack Obama is elected, the Chicago Tribune writes. Many observers believe that liberal-leaning John Paul Stevens, 88, would choose to step down and let Obama choose his successor. But others think he may stay another four years and become the longest-serving justice in American history—as testament to his devotion to the job, rather than out of pride.

The sputtering economy could topple plans to erect the nation’s tallest skyscraper, reports the Chicago Tribune. Consultants on the construction of the Chicago Spire have filed liens, with celebrity architect Santiago Calatrava seeking more than $11.3 million and a Chicago-based firm demanding $4.85 million. The developer’s spokesman acknowledged the economy’s effect on the project, calling the market “the 800-pound gorilla in the room.”

In its first-ever endorsement of a Democrat in a US presidential election, the Chicago Tribune touts Barack Obama as the candidate “to lead us through a perilous time and restore in us a common sense of national purpose.” It cites its backing of independents against Republicans as precedent, decisions similarly “driven by outrage at inept and corrupt business and political leaders.”

A Chicago lawman is going to stop enforcing foreclosure evictions because they’re unfair to renters, the Chicago Tribune reports. Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart has a huge and growing eviction list but is refusing to carry out any more mortgage-foreclosure evictions until lenders first figure out who’s actually living at foreclosed properties. A United Airlines flight was diverted last night to Chicago's O'Hare airport after 14 passengers suddenly became ill with flu-like symptoms. Four were taken to a local hospital in fair condition. United hadn't served any food on the plane, heading from Boston to Los Angeles, officials said. Several of the passengers were from the same tour group. "I don't remember ever hearing of that many people fall ill here before," said an FAA spokesman.

A federal judge has postponed political fund-raiser Tony Rezko’s October 28 sentencing indefinitely, potentially lightening Barack Obama's political load, the Chicago Sun-Times reports. Rezko has been linked to Obama, and his sentencing for improper financial dealings could have meant bad publicity just before the election. The delay is a strong sign that Rezko is offering the government information on Illinois political corruption, the AP notes.

The Nobel Prize for physics was awarded today to three researchers whose work on "broken symmetry" has clarified the origins of the universe. Their theories—a cornerstone of the so-called Standard Model of physics—explain how the world came into being after the Big Bang; although huge amounts of matter and antimatter canceled each other out, a small deviation in proportions allowed the cosmos to survive.
