The junior senator from Illinois becomes the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee

Ask five Americans about Barack Obama, and you're likely to get six opinions: America's not ready for a black president; America can't afford not to have a black president; Barack Obama isn't really black. We're about to find out. The wunderkind Chicago Senator became the party's presumptive nominee in June after clinching the magic number of delegates. Wright was due to lead a Tampa, Fla., church's three-day revival beginning yesterday, and visit several Houston-area churches Sunday.   Barack Obama's campaign posted his tax returns from 2000-06 online today in another attempt to portray the Clinton campaign as secretive, the Chicago Tribune reports. Obama has hounded Clinton to make her post-White House tax records public; she has said she will do so soon. The Obamas' income ranged from $240,000 in 2000 to $1.6 million in 2005, MSNBC reports, the latter figure largely due to proceeds from his autobiography. More »
