Giuliani 2008

Hope he's still in a New York state of mind.

Turns out Rudy Giuliani is the Nelson Rockefeller of the 21st- century. The former federal prosecutor and mayor of New York City is a northeastern, urban Republican with moderate views on social and fiscal issues. He is also unconventional, temperamental, and thrice married (once to a second cousin)—not your classic GOP "values" candidate. Putting all is focus on the Florida Primary turned was the last nail in Rudy's Republican 2008 presidential bid.  Rockefeller never got the nomination, and neither did Rudy.

Rudy: 'Barack Obama Has Never Led Anything'

(Newser) - Rudy Giuliani tonight delivered the most blistering attack yet on Barack Obama's qualifications to be president, belittling him as a "celebrity senator" with no legislative record to speak of, MSNBC reports. "He’s never run a city, he’s never run a state, he’s never run a business, he’s never run a military unit,” Giuliani said. “He’s never had to lead people in crisis." It's not a personal attack, he said, but merely a "statement of fact." More »

(Newser) - Rudy Giuliani has offered to appear at fundraisers for cash-strapped Republican candidates but with strings attached, the New York Times reports. Rudy Flouts Communion Ban at Pope Mass

(Newser) - Twice-divorced one-time GOP presidential candidate Rudy Giuliani started angry tongues wagging yesterday when he received communion at the pope's mass, which is contrary to church rules. As a divorced Catholic, Giuliani is barred from receiving communion, yet he stepped up to the altar with wife No. 3 at St. Patrick's Cathedral. "He knows better," one miffed Catholic told the New York Daily News. More »

McCain, Obama Left No Place for Bloomberg

(Newser) - If Rudy and Hillary were the frontrunners, Michael Bloomberg wouldn't have ruled out an independent bid for the presidency, as he did today, writes Jon Meacham of Newsweek .  But John McCain and Barack Obama, the putative nominees, have a lock on the “novelty narrative,” so the billionaire mayor—who's been successively a Democrat, then Republican, then independent—made “the wise business decision to save his money.” More »

      Rudy Drops Out, Backs McCain

Why Rudy Fell So Far, So Fast

(Newser) - How did the man who took summer polls by storm fall so precipitously in the esteem of GOP voters that he was finished by Florida, the state he chose for his first big victory? It could be the hubris, the inexperienced campaign team, the strategic mistakes—or it could be that "the more Republican voters saw of Mr. Giuliani, the less they wanted to vote for him," conclude Michael Powell and Michael Cooper in the New York Times . 3rd Place Would Finish Rudy

(Newser) - A poor showing in today's Florida primary could scuttle Rudy Giuliani’s campaign, his chairman admitted yesterday. "If he is second or first, he certainly has momentum. But if he finishes third, it's going to be hard to get momentum,” Houston lawyer Pat Oxford told the Dallas Morning News . Giuliani is touting himself as an odds-defying guy, but he's far behind John McCain and Mitt Romney in polls. More »

Giuliani Spins Lack of Fla. Endorsements

(Newser) - Grasping for good news on the eve of the Florida primary, Rudy Giuliani released a video today touting his failure to win endorsements from the Tampa Tribune , Orlando Sentinel , South Florida Sun-Sentinel , and New York Times . “He’s not endorsed by any of the liberal newspapers,” the voice-over boasts. But a couple of those publications aren’t known for their leftism, the St. Petersburg Times notes. More »

His brusque style is leaving uninspired voters in his wake. “There was just no energy, you know?” said one. More »

Republicans Seek Edge in Calm Florida Debate

(Newser) - The GOP debate in Florida remained a largely civil affair last night, with the leading candidates agreeing that the economy needs aggressive tax cuts and that Hillary Clinton has no business returning to the White House, the AP reports. In one of the few bits of drama, Mitt Romney took John McCain to task for voting against Bush's first tax cuts. McCain responded that it was the right move at the time and said he was "very proud" of his record as a fiscal conservative.
