Clinton 2008

Though she led in the popular vote (so she claims), the champagne wishes and Presidential dreams are over for Hillary.

Love her or hate her (and many people fall into one or the other of these camps), Hillary Clinton ran neck and neck with Obama for the Democratic nomination. Her husband, who helped her top the fundraising charts for the first quarter (but not by nearly as big a margin as expected), was both one of her biggest assets and her biggest liabilities. She's won kudos in the Senate for hard work and bipartisan effectiveness, but in the end the numbers just weren't on her side.

HRC to FNC: Howard Wolfson Joins Fox News

(Newser) - Howard Wolfson, a top strategist for HIllary Clinton's campaign and one of her most visible television surrogates, has found a new employer, and it's not Barack Obama. Wolfson will become a contributor to the Fox News Channel, appearing on multiple programs. His move to Fox echoes a general feeling among Clintonites that the network, once considered the scourge of Democrats, treated Hillary better than other news organizations during the primary. More »

Obama Yet to Win Clinton's Big Donors

(Newser) - Big-money supporters of Hillary Clinton angry over her treatment during the Democratic primaries are slow to back presumptive nominee Barack Obama, the Wall Street Journal reports. A recent poll shows only 54% of Clinton voters plan to support Obama; recent analysis of donors who gave $1,000 or more to Clinton shows as many gave to Republican John McCain as to Obama since she left. How to Get His Groove Back

(Newser) - After a nasty campaign, Bill Clinton has a serious image problem. But if he moves quickly, he can escape any long-term damage, reports Politico, which surveys experts in the field for advice on his behalf. “He needs to put this story behind him by Labor Day,” said one, and he should start by offering his sincere support to Obama. "Right now what he is doing is thinking about Bill Clinton. He has to put the party and country first.” Other advice: More »

What Early July Says About Early November

(Newser) - Barack Obama currently leads John McCain 47% to 43%, but does that mean anything this early? Yes and no. Early July Gallup polls have correctly predicted the eventual popular vote winner in 10 of the last 15 elections, but they missed the mark in four of the last five. Politico looks back. More »

No More Baby Face: Long Campaign Is Aging Obama

(Newser) - "By the time I’m sworn in, I will look the part," Barack Obama quipped to donors Wednesday. Indeed, the long and grueling campaign is swiftly aging the relatively fresh-faced candidate, Politico writes; he's showing more wrinkles and his hair is getting grayer by the day. In sharp contrast to the unflattering coverage given to erstwhile rival Hillary Clinton's appearance, however, many say that Father Time is giving Obama's image a boost. More »

Not So Fast With Those Numbers, David Brooks

(Newser) - Despite David Brooks' attempts to “muddy” the mathematical waters, Barack Obama’s tax plan doesn’t hit the wealthy very hard—and it’s the one that helps the middle class, Jared Bernstein writes in Talking Points Memo Café. Brooks wrote in the Times that moneyed Americans would pay “over 50% of their income” under Obama, but Bernstein says the top 1% would fork over 36%, the top 0.1% only 39%—comparable to rates under Clinton. Iran and American Jews: 'Divided Loyalties'?

(Newser) - With rhetoric on Iran escalating almost daily, Glenn Greenwald reviews recent charges that Israel's agenda is what's behind all this agitation for war. When Joe Klein argued last week in Time that some war proponents are “motivated by their allegiance to Israel,” reaction was "as vicious, furious and dishonest as it was predictable," Greenwald writes in Salon. Inside Clinton's Dysfunctional War Machine

(Newser) - There are many reasons for Hillary Clinton’s primary defeat, and most of them can be found within the political warrior and the creaking war machine she built, Gail Sheehy writes in Vanity Fair . Invoking the Lincoln administration, Clinton called her bickering advisers a “team of rivals.” Craving secrecy and shaped by White House battle scars, she chose a trustworthy cabal of loyalists—who hated each other. Candidates Grapple With Timing of VP Picks

(Newser) - Barack Obama and John McCain must do more than pick VP candidates—they have to time the announcements carefully, a key tactical move in a busy summer, the New York Times reports. Two national conventions, the Beijing Olympics, and Obama's Aug. 4 birthday all help or hinder the timing, but it appears that Obama, with a convention closer to the games, faces the harder choice. Clinton remains “very unhopeful” Obama can win in November, another source says, a
