Clinton 2008

Hillary Clinton's 2008 Presidential campaign fell short, so what now for the Senator?

Hillary Clinton's historic race for the White House in 2008 is now over, a hard-fought, often bitter campaign that ran right into Barack Obama's history making turn. While she has predicted a 'zero chance' of seeking the Presidency again in 2012, it seems unlikely her political ambitions will peak with her Senatorial post. Talk has been floated about a Supreme Court appointment, is this her future? Stay tuned.

Hillary Can Only Lose Tonight—but She Knows How to Lose

(Newser) - Hillary Clinton's mission in Denver tonight is both painful and fraught with peril, Marie Cocco writes in the Washington Post . As “cheerleader in chief" who may want to pursue another run herself, she can't really win—surely she'll be criticized for being either too methodical or too exuberant, and her supporters will misbehave—but Clinton has to know that going in, and “Clinton is a woman who knows how to lose.” More »

      Dems, Still Bruised, Open Convention

(AP) - The Democrats opened their 2008 presidential nominating convention today in Denver, a four-day political festival to nominate Barack Obama for president and fellow Sen. Joe Biden as his running mate. Sen. Edward M. Kennedy, who is battling brain cancer, was in Denver for the opening and might speak tonight to fellow Democrats still trying to recover from a long and bruising primary battle between Obama and Hillary Clinton. Obama-Clinton Tension Runs High in Denver

(Newser) - Months after Hillary Clinton announced her support for Barack Obama, tensions between the two camps have flared again, Politico reports, and behind-the-scenes sniping in Denver is intense. Bill Clinton is unhappy with his speech assignment—Wednesday night's theme, securing America's future, leaves him little room to revisit the successes of his own presidency—while Obama aides say Clinton associates still act like the former first couple has leverage. Clinton to Police Her Devotees in Denver

(Newser) - Hillary Clinton is deploying a 40-member "whip team" at the Democratic convention in Denver to make sure her supporters do not cause a ruckus with anti-Obama demonstrations during the roll-call vote, reports Politico. The symbolic floor vote on Clinton's nomination is supposed to be an emotional "catharsis" for her backers, but not too emotional. Clinton joins Obama in wanting to present a unified Democratic front, she says. More »

Obama Camp Steers Clear of Arkansas

(Newser) - Barack Obama has a novel strategy in Arkansas, a Southern state that likes Democrats: He's not there. The presumptive nominee has no Arkansas office and hasn't even visited in 2 years. Yet analysts aren't surprised, noting that conservative Democrats heavily favor Hillary Clinton and backed President Bush the past two elections. Arkansas also skews whiter than other Southern states, with only a 16% black population. More »

Clinton to Get Roll-Call Vote at Convention

(Newser) - Hillary Clinton’s name will be formally entered in nomination at the Democratic convention later this month, Newsday reports. Clinton’s name will be placed in a roll-call vote for a symbolic recognition of her historic campaign—and as an olive branch from those hoping to lessen the resentment from supporters of her failed campaign. • Clinton Will Get Denver Roll Call

Clinton Will Get Denver Roll Call

(Newser) - Hillary Clinton’s delegates will be counted in Denver, the Atlantic Monthly’s Marc Ambinder reports, as her supporters near an agreement with Barack Obama’s. Reports of tensions over the issue are exaggerated, advisers on both sides tell Ambinder. Both sides agree that overlooking Clinton could anger her supporters, as would a delegate count below the 1,896.5 she earned in the primaries. More »

      Hillary's Crashing Obama's Party

(Newser) - Despite losing the nomination months ago, Hillary Clinton is taking her fight to the convention, writes Maureen Dowd in the New York Times. The New York senator’s continued machinations show she "feels no guilt about encouraging her supporters to mess up Obama’s big moment, thus undermining his odds of beating John McCain and improving her odds of being the nominee in 2012." How Infighting Doomed Clinton

(Newser) - Hillary Clinton’s presidential bid failed for many reasons, the most prominent her campaign team's stunning dysfunction, writes Joshua Green in a much-anticipated Atlantic Monthly feature. Green uncovered a trove of memos, finding a team overwhelmed by “anger and toxic obsessions.” Clinton acted nothing like a chief executive, putting off countless decisions until it was too late. (Newser) - A group of Hillary Clinton's delegates are working to make sure their candidate's name is put up for nomination at the Democratic convention, the San Francisco Chronicle reports. Edwards Lie Cost Hillary the Nomination, Aide Says

(Newser) - Hillary Clinton’s former communications director is convinced that had the media outed John Edwards last year, Clinton would be the Democratic nominee. “We would have won Iowa,” Howard Wolfson tells ABC. “Our voters and Edwards’ voters were the same people. They were older, pro-union.” Obama won Iowa with 37.6% of the vote, followed by Edwards with 29.7% and Clinton with 29.5%. More »

Hillary Camp Memo: 'Paint Obama as Un-American'

(Newser) - Hillary Clinton’s top campaign strategist urged her to paint Barack Obama as un-American, reports the Atlantic in an upcoming article obtained by Politico . Clinton should empahsize that Obama's ties “to basic American values and culture” were "limited," according to a campaign memo. “Does anyone believe that it is possible to win the nomination without raising these issues on him?” asked strategist Mark Penn in the memo. (Newser) - Michelle Obama will take center stage the first night of the Democratic National Convention, the Denver Post reports, while Hillary Clinton will headline the next, speaking on the 88th anniversary of US women’s suffrage. “This year's Democratic Convention is the story of people from across the country who believe it is time for change,” said Kansas Gov. Kathleen Sebelius, a convention co-chair. More »

      Why the Rift Isn't Healing

(Newser) - A little more than a month after the joint rally in Unity, NH, the Obama-Clinton relationship is still chilly, writes Howard Fineman, who faults both sides for letting their continuing squabble turn what should be a slam-dunk election year for the Democrats into a squeaker. For someone who’s running partly on the claim that his knack for diplomacy will heal the world, Obama has done surprisingly little to reach out to his former rivals. More »

Clintons Still Seething Over Racist Portrayal

(Newser) - The Democratic primary battle ended months ago, but many in both Hillary and Bill Clinton’s circles still harbor a grudge over the way her campaign was painted as racist, Ben Smith writes in Politico. This ill will is coming back to haunt presumptive nominee Barack Obama as he grapples with the McCain campaign's suggestion he is now playing the race card. More »

      'Dream Ticket' Odds Fading

(Newser) - An Obama-Clinton ticket is looking less and less likely, based on the public and private comments of both senators, the New York Times reports. Obama hasn’t asked Hillary Clinton for background check documents, and his recent statement that he’s looking for a Washington outsider suggests he won’t. Clinton has privately told associates that she doesn’t expect the nod and considers any statements to the contrary a courtesy only. More »

      Babs: Obama's Like Buttah

(Newser) - Hillary Clinton may have been her first choice, but Barbra Streisand’s switch to Barack Obama after he wrapped up the nomination was “immediate”—and she's not too keen on Clinton-backers considering crossing the aisle. In an interview with Politico, she lays into John McCain on women’s rights, veterans’ benefits, and Iraq, says Obama should take a good look at Clinton's health care plan, and warns that racism will be a factor this fall. Love Affair Between Press, Obama Is On the Rocks

(Newser) - Might the much ballyhooed love affair between the press and Barack Obama be coming to an end? Republicans watching coverage of his Europe trip would scoff, but Gabriel Sherman writes in the New Republic of a growing resentment between reporters on the trail and a campaign staff seen as more and more arrogant, secretive, and willing to freeze out reporters seen as uncooperative.
