Minn. Bridge Collapse

The catastrophic collapse of a Minneapolis bridge during rush hour leaves at least 4 dead, and scores wounded or missing

Dozens of cars plunged into the Mississippi River when a 4-lane bridge collapsed during evening rush hour on August 1, 2007. Tragically, both the US and Minnesota Departments of Transportation had long warned that the bridge was "structurally deficient"; now officials must navigate the murky waters of blame even as divers continue their search for the dead.

(Newser) - Gusset plates on the Minnesota bridge that collapsed this summer already showed signs of weakness in 2003 photos just released by the National Transportation Safety Board, reports the Minneapolis Star Tribune . Bridge Had Fatal Design Flaw

(Newser) - The Minneapolis bridge that failed last summer, killing 13 people, had fatal design flaws, the NTSB announced today. Steel gusset plates that held together beams on the eight-lane bridge were half the thickness they should have been, investigators found. While the agency didn't say the gusset plates caused the collapse,16 fractured plates were discovered on the center span, which collapsed during the evening rush hour Aug. 1, AP reports. More »

(Newser) - Bicyclists and green activists beg to differ with Mary Peters, the US transportation secretary who decreed last month that bicycle and walking paths shouldn’t fall under her funding purview, and spending on them may be to blame for the poor state of roads and bridges. Advocates of pedal power have been in an uproar ever since Peters said biking and walking are  "are really not transportation," Salon reports. More »

Sensors Could Stop the Next Bridge Collapse

(Newser) - New technology can diagnose bridge stress months before human investigators—currently armed with binoculars— could ever detect them. BusinessWeek compares the small wireless sensors to stethoscopes, as they’re capable of gauging vibration, temperature and corrosion beneath the paint. Testers ride trucks over the sensors and monitor signals, listening for the small sounds that signal weakness. More »

      Feds Spot Bridge Support Flaw

(Newser) - Federal experts investigating the Minneapolis bridge disaster have identified a structural flaw that may have led to the collapse, reports the New York Times . Federal authorities immediately warned states to be careful to calculate added weight when assigning construction crews to work on bridges. More »

But state officials opted for patchwork repairs and more inspections rather than a complete overhaul. "We thought we had done all we could," said an engineer.  "Obviously, something went terribly wrong." More »
