      Yankees: Sabathia a Done Deal

      (Newser) - Yankees officials are confident that pitcher CC Sabathia will sign with the team, the New York Times reports. The seven-year, $160 million deal is the priciest ever for a pitcher. Yankees GM Brian Cashman recently met twice with Sabathia in Las Vegas and again yesterday in San Francisco. Sabathia had reportedly wanted to play in California, but no offers emerged. More »

      Philly Powers Into NLCS With 6-2 Win Over Brewers

      (AP) - The Philadelphia Phillies found plenty of power to go with their pitching, right in time for the NL championship series, the AP reports. Pat Burrell broke out of his slump in a big way with two homers, one a three-run shot, and Jimmy Rollins and Jayson Werth added solo drives today to lead the Phillies to a 6-2 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers that clinched their first trip to the NLCS since 1993.       (Newser) - The Cubs' century of misery won't end this year. The Dodgers beat Chicago 3-1 to complete a sweep of their best-of-5 NL playoff series, the Chicago Tribune reports. James Loney, the grand-slam hero of Game 1, hit a 2-run double in the first that held up for LA. The Cubs entered the playoffs with the NL's best record but scored only 6 runs in 3 games. The Brewers, meanwhile, beat the Phillies 4-1 to force Game 4 this afternoon. More »

      Phillies Up 2-0 on Brewers

      (Newser) - Shane Victorino's grand slam off a weary C.C. Sabathia blasted the Phillies to a 5-2 win over the Brewers and a 2-0 lead in the NL championship series, the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel reports. The Brewers, who only managed three hits, will put Dave Bush on the mound tomorrow when Milwaukee sees its first postseason game since 1982. More »

      (Newser) - Jason Bay and Manny Ramirez both proved why they’d been acquired last night. Bay hit a two-run shot to give the Red Sox a lead they never relinquished, sending Anaheim to a 4-1 defeat, while the man he was traded for hit a solo shot in the Dodgers' 7-2 win over the Cubs.       (Newser) - Cole Hamels struck out nine in eight shutout innings and got all the run support he needed on a two-run, third-inning double from Chase Utley as the Philadelphia Phillies won Game 1 of their first-round National League playoff series against the visiting Milwaukee Brewers, 3-1. The victory was Philadelphia’s first in the postseason since 1993, when the Phillies went to the World Series, Fox Sports reports. More »

      (Newser) - Andruw Jones, Jeff Kent and Gary Bennett homered during a six-run seventh inning, leading Chad Billingsley and the Los Angeles Dodgers over the Milwaukee Brewers 7-2 yesterday. After Jones and Kent hit solo shots, Bennett capped the burst with a three-run homer.       (Newser) - Milwaukee's beleaguered bullpen blew another game, this time without the help of Eric Gagne. Juan Pierre hit a go-ahead, two-run double in the ninth inning, and the Los Angeles Dodgers overcame a three-run deficit to beat the Brewers 6-4 Wednesday night and stop a season-high, six-game losing streak.       (Newser) - Ryan Braun delivered another big hit and Eric Gagne made a bid to reclaim his job as the Milwaukee Brewers' closer in a 5-3 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Tuesday.       (Newser) - Ryan Braun hit two home runs for the second game in a row, and St. Louis Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina and manager Tony La Russa both were ejected from the Milwaukee Brewers' 8-3 victory Monday night. Braun followed up Sunday's two-homer performance by hitting two more off stingy Cardinals starter Adam Wainwright (3-2), who had given up four runs or less in his first seven starts and had a 2.25 ERA going into the game.       (Newser) - Matt Treanor achieved a career high in RBIs with one swing last night, hitting a three-run homer to help the Florida Marlins complete a three-game sweep by beating Milwaukee 7-2. Jorge Cantu also homered for Florida, who won their fourth game in a row and matched their best start after 34 games (20-14). Florida's Luis Gonzalez went 3-for-3 and finished the series 7-for-11.
