      (Newser) - A man armed with a rifle shot a security guard today at Washington’s National Holocaust Museum, WTOP-AM reports. Police say two other guards fired back at the alleged shooter, striking him. A third person was injured by flying glass at the tourist attraction, which typically has high security.       (Newser) - Gangs of kidnappers preying on illegal Mexicans immigrants or drug rivals are turning Phoenix into the kidnap capital of the US, reports the Wall Street Journal. In one raid, 30 shivering, half-naked smuggled immigrants were discovered in an abandoned home. They had been shaken down for thousands of dollars. The kidnappers are helped by the failing Phoenix housing market, which has left thousands of houses empty, giving criminals have their pick of places to stash captives. More »

      (Newser) - Unabomber Ted Kacynski is battling plans by the federal government to auction his belongings, including diaries, typewriters, a hatchet, and his trademark sunglasses and hooded jacket, reports CNN. Proceeds of the sales will go to four wounded survivors of his  mail bomb attacks who are owed $15 million awarded to them in a civil suit. In a hand-written legal document, Kacynski has noted that a district court order allowing the auction "violates K's First Amendment rights." More »

      Brit Nursery Teacher Busted in Pedophile Internet Ring

      (Newser) - A British daycare teacher has been busted for suspected involvement in an Internet pedophile ring after photos of naked children were found in her home, reports the Telegraph . A police spokesman said the pictures were "at the top end of the scale." Officials are attempting to identify the photographed children and determine if any of them attend the nursery school where teacher Vanessa George works. More »

      (Newser) - The man accused of murdering abortion provider George Tiller told CNN today that he considers it a “victory” that Tiller’s family will shut his Kansas clinic. The closure means “no more slicing and dicing of the unborn child,” Scott Roeder said in an interview.       (Newser) - Thieves stole a sketchbook containing 33 Pablo Picasso drawings from the Picasso Museum in Paris, the Daily Mail reports. The security system was somehow disabled and there was no sign of forced entry. The theft occurred sometime last night or early today and resembles the 2007 robbery of the home of one of Picasso’s granddaughters, when two paintings worth $55 million were taken. More »

      Corruption Trial of Ex-Louisiana Rep Kicks Off

      (Newser) - Jury selection began today in the trial of former Louisiana Rep. William Jefferson, the New Orleans Times-Picayune reports. The Democrat is charged with taking bribes and using his office to set up business deals in Africa. “It is good to have my family with me,” he said as he arrived at the courthouse in Virginia. In 2005, federal investigators traced $90,000 from an informant to Jefferson’s freezer. More »

      Tanzania Opens Trials in Killings of Albinos

      (Newser) - Tanzania is trying seven people for murdering albinos and selling their body parts for use in witchcraft, the BBC reports. Dozens have been arrested in some 40 murders over the past year and a half, but so far no one has been convicted. Witch doctors sell “albino potions” for thousands of dollars, saying they bring good luck; some of their customers are believed to be top businessmen. More »

      (Newser) - A man accused of telling a Utah bank teller "We are on a mission to kill the president of the United States" is in federal custody and will face charges, the Las Vegas Sun reports. Daniel James Murray was arrested outside a hotel in Nevada Friday. He will be sent to Utah, where he could be sentenced to up to five years in jail if found guilty. More »

      Dude Busted for Smuggling Pot on Surfboard

      (Newser) - A Mexican surfer off a California beach was busted for trying to smuggle 24 pounds of pot on his board, reports the Los Angeles Times . When suspicious cops on the beach close to the Mexican border ordered the surfer to come ashore, he heaved a duffel bag into the water. It later washed up, packed with pot bricks worth $74,000, according to law enforcement authorities. More »

      (Newser) - The man accused in the April car crash that killed Los Angeles Angels pitcher Nick Adenhart, 22, and two others pleaded not guilty today to three counts of murder, the Orange County Register reports.       (AP) - Authorities say a pregnant woman who was found dead in a crawl space of a suburban Oregon home had been cut open and her baby delivered from her womb. The Washington County sheriff's office said today that it couldn't be determined if the infant son of Heather Snively died before or after he was removed from the womb; the autopsy showed that Snively died of "blunt" and "sharp force" injuries.       (AP) - Jurors in the kidnapping trial of the German man who calls himself Clark Rockefeller ended deliberations for today without a verdict. The Boston jurors got the case shortly after noon, and later asked the judge questions about one of the charges, that of providing a false name to police.       (Newser) - Gunmen killed 11 people and injured 12 in a southern Thailand mosque today, AFP reports. Officials said between two and five armed men entered the mosque and fired “indiscriminately.” It’s the latest incident in a 5-year guerrilla war that has killed 3,700 in Narathiwat province. The gunmen were likely rebels trying to pass themselves off as soldiers in an effort to stir up anger, one official says. More »

      (Newser) - A Pennsylvania state trooper who was injured during a police chase and shootout in the Poconos has died, the Express-Times reports. The incident began last night with a custody dispute. When police arrived at a home in Nazareth, Pa., the 31-year-old suspect fled, taking his 9-year-old son with him. Heather Snively, 21—who was due next month—was found dead in a crawl space of an Oregon home. Police discovered the corpse after the woman who lives there, Korena Roberts, arrived at a local hospital with a baby boy who doctors determined wasn't hers. The baby died soon afterward. More »
