      (AP) - The suspect in Sunday's shooting death of Dr. George Tiller was charged today with first-degree murder. Scott Roeder, 51, made a brief appearance in a Kansas court via video link from jail. "OK," he responded when Judge Ben Burgess read the charges in the slaying of the abortion provider.  Burgess ordered Roeder to be held without bond and said he was not allowed to communicate with Tiller's family.   More »

      Feds Boost Abortion Clinic Security Amid Tiller Probe

      (Newser) - US Attorney General Eric Holder boosted security for abortion providers yesterday as the FBI investigated a vandalism incident at the clinic operated by slain doctor George Tiller, the Wichita Eagle reports. Tiller reported a threat last month, days after the Women’s Health Care Services clinic sustained thousands of dollars in damage, including cut security camera wires and a hole in the roof that resulted in extensive rain damage.       Phoenix 'Ma Barker' Ran Crew of Boy Robbers: Cops

      (Newser) - An out-of-work Phoenix mother has been arrested for organizing a gang of teenage robbers, including her two young sons, reports the Arizona Republic. The woman maintains she was merely the getaway driver, but investigators say she coached her posse to jump out of her car and pistol-whip other teens to steal cash, iPods and cell phones at least 20 times. Her 12- and 14-year-old sons have also been busted. More »

      Murder Suspect Tycoon Nabbed in Woods

      (Newser) - A British tycoon suspected of fatally beating his wealthy lover with furniture and his fists in a Paris hotel has been found camping in England, reports the Telegraph . Ian Griffin, 39, was tracked down "living rough" in Cheshire, said a police source. He had withdrawn a "large amount" of cash from his lover's account, according to cops. Griffin tried to flee by sea after Polish millionnaire Kinga Legg's battered body was found last week, but he was unable to quickly obtain a boat. More »

      (Newser) - The ex-wife of the man suspected in yesterday’s fatal shooting of a Kansas abortion doctor says Scott Roeder underwent a mental evaluation and that, though he didn’t consider himself unstable, “everyone else did.” Lindsey Roeder says Scott’s views on abortion were so fierce she stopped discussing them with him, she tells the Topeka Capital-Journa l: “His anti-abortion rhetoric was very strong.       (Newser) - Elisabeth Fritzl has “renewed strength” after beginning a relationship with her bodyguard, the Telegraph reports.       (AP) - A federal judge today ordered the US to publicly reveal unclassified versions of its allegations and evidence justifying the continued imprisonment of more than 100 detainees being held at Guantanamo Bay. The Justice Department had been filing unclassified versions of its legal documents under seal, so that they could only be seen by judges, attorneys and government officials. More »

      (Newser) - The Navy is questioning the crew of the Maersk Alabama and members of its own SEAL unit about $30,000 that went missing from the hijacked cargo ship, the New York Post reports. The money was taken by the pirates during the hijacking attempt but was not recovered after they were killed or captured. “We don't comment on the details of an ongoing investigation,” said a spokesman from the Naval Criminal Investigative Service.       (Newser) - The tycoon lover of a Polish businesswoman found battered to death in the bathtub of a ritzy Paris hotel claims the woman attacked him with a stun gun before a fatal fight, reports the Times of London. British millionaire Ian Griffin told a former girlfriend that Kinga Legg used a stun gun that was disguised as a lipstick.       Police Arrest Suspect in Murder of Abortion Doc

      (Newser) - Police in Wichita, Kan., have arrested a 51-year-old male suspect in the murder of abortion doctor George Tiller, who was gunned down today as he walked into church, the Wichita Eagle reports. Wichita police Capt. Brent Allred did not name the suspect but did say other agencies, including the FBI, are assisting on the case. Tiller, 67, was famous nationwide as a target of pro-life demonstrations and attacks. More »

      (Newser) - Jimi Hendrix's manager murdered the legendary rocker to cash in on a $2 million life insurance policy, an aide reveals in a new book. Hendrix was "worth more dead to him than alive," according to roadie James Wright. Wright said manager Michael Jeffrey confessed to him that he filled the musician's mouth with sedatives and wine because Hendrix was about to hire a new manager.       (Newser) - Iraq’s erstwhile trade minister has been arrested on charges of corruption, the BBC reports. Abdul Falah Sudani resigned his post earlier this month after allegations emerged that he and other officials in his department were embezzling government funds.       (Newser) - Aung San Suu Kyi feels no ill will toward the American who infiltrated her home in an act that could land her another 5 years of prison, the AP reports. “Suu Kyi said she bore no grudge against (John) Yettaw or his family,” her lawyer said after a meeting today. Meanwhile, Myanmar officials said Suu Kyi is “provided with adequate health care and she is in good health” after reports that she was gravely ill.       (Newser) - A Los Angeles judge today sentenced Phil Spector to 19 years to life in prison in the 2003 shooting death of actress Lana Clarkson. The legendary music producer, whose first trial in the case ended in a mistrial, plans to appeal, KTLA-TV reports. Spector, 69, listened impassively as he drew the mandatory minimum of 15 years to life for second-degree murder, plus 4 years on a gun charge. More »
