      Wife of D'Backs Pitcher Found Dead at Home

      (Newser) - The wife of Arizona Diamondbacks pitcher Scott Schoeneweis was found dead in the couple's home yesterday, the Arizona Republic reports. Investigators have yet to determine how Gabrielle Schoeneweis died, but they said there are no signs of foul play. Schoeneweis learned of his wife's death just before last night's double-header against the Florida Marlins in Miami and immediately left to join their four children. More »

      Pitcher Schilling Retires at 42

      (AP) - Red Sox pitcher Curt Schilling says he's retiring from baseball. The 42-year-old right-hander who won World Series championships with Arizona and Boston announced on his blog today that he's leaving after 23 years with "zero regrets." Schilling missed all of last season with a shoulder injury. For his career, he has the 14th-most strikeouts in baseball history. He leaves with a 216-146 record and 3.46 earned-run average. More »

      (Newser) - Backed by Stephen Drew's career-high four hits, Brandon Webb became the major leagues' first nine-game winner when the Arizona Diamondbacks defeated the Colorado Rockies 8-5 last night. Webb (9-0) – who has won his first nine starts - allowed three runs on six hits, walked one and struck out eight. He has now won 11 straight starts dating to last September. More »

      (Newser) - Backed by Stephen Drew's three-run homer, Randy Johnson went five shaky innings for his 287th career victory and the Arizona Diamondbacks beat Colorado 8-4 on Tuesday night. The Big Unit (3-1) gave up four runs and nine hits, striking out four and walking none. Chris Young had three hits as the Diamondbacks hammered Colorado starter Jeff Francis (0-4), a 17-game winner for the NL champions a year ago. More »

      (Newser) - Pinch-hitter Daryle Ward delivered a two-run double in the eighth inning, and the Chicago Cubs rallied again to beat Arizona 6-4 Sunday after the anticipated showdown between Carlos Zambrano and Randy Johnson got wiped out. Carlos Marmol (1-0) struck out two in a perfect eighth and Kerry Wood pitched the ninth to earn his seventh save and finish off Chicago's three-game sweep. More »

      (Newser) - Alfonso Soriano had four hits, including a go-ahead double in a six-run seventh inning, and showed some flair on the bases to help the Cubs beat Arizona 7-2. Kosuke Fukudome's first homer since opening day capped the seventh-inning rally as the Cubs won their second straight against the team that swept them in the first round of the playoffs last October.       (Newser) - Ted Lilly kept his glove on his hand this time. Lilly gave up another homer to Chris Young, but instead of throwing a tantrum the left-hander led the Chicago Cubs over Arizona 3-1 today in the first meeting between the teams since the Diamondbacks' sweep in last year's playoffs. Young homered off Lilly in Game 2 last October during Arizona's 8-4 win, prompting Lilly to slam his glove down. More »

      (Newser) - Brandon Webb became the first pitcher to win his first eight starts in three years, tossing his 13th career complete game to help the Arizona Diamondbacks beat the Philadelphia Phillies 8-3 on Thursday.       (Newser) - Stephen Drew hit a three-run homer and Randy Johnson earned his 286th victory as the Arizona Diamondbacks defeated the Philadelphia Phillies 6-4 on Tuesday night in a matchup of NL division leaders. Drew's homer capped a five-run outburst against Adam Eaton (0-1) in the fourth inning.
