Paul's Last Second Layup Beats Nets

(Newser) - In a battle of premier U.S.-born point guards, Chris Paul prevailed over Jason Kidd and the Nets with 27 points, including the game-winner for the Hornets, a layup with 2.6 ticks left on the clock. With Vince Carter out indefinitely, the Nets' Richard Jefferson had a monster 32-point game through three quarters, but fell completely silent for the fourth. In other NBA action: More »

    • Ask the expert: What's up with Collins, Jazz bigs?

Q: What's up with Collins? Or maybe the bigger question is; what's the bigger plan for the bigs. Do the Jazz need more finesse or more muscle, do they need an enforcer and boarder or a passer/distributor? -- Vern Della-Piana The Jazz led the NBA in rebounding percentage last season, so I don't think that's the need. They could have upgraded with a backup big man, especially given Mehmet Okur's struggles in the playoffs last season, but Collins has been here for six years and knows the system. The list of affordable big men who changed teams this summer -- Jamaal Magloire, Mikki Moore,...

    • Jazz Sign Kyrylo Fesenko

Utah Jazz senior vice president of basketball operations, Kevin O%u2019Connor, announced today that the team has signed rookie center Kyrylo Fesenko to a multi-year contract. Per team policy, terms of the contract were not released. The Jazz acquired the draft rights to Fesenko (selected 38th overall in the 2007 NBA Draft) from Philadelphia in a draft night deal that sent the draft rights to Herbert Hill (55th overall pick) and trade considerations to the 76ers. A native of the Ukraine, Fesenko (7-0, 270 lbs.) appeared in all six games for the Jazz entry in the 2007 Rocky Mountain Revue, making...

    • Sloan not keen on All-Star gig

During his impressive career, Jerry Sloan never has coached in an All-Star Game. So is that something he's hoping to do in February? "No,'' Sloan said. If Sloan is in position to be the Western Conference coach, he said he will serve. But it may not be with a smile on his face. "To me, it's not really true basketball,'' Sloan said of the All-Star Game. "It's a one-day thing. Guys either play or don't play. Some guys don't want to (play). "I don't think they're totally enamored with playing with playing on the All-Star team. They'd rather be home doing something else and having the days off.'' So...

    • Mauled in Memphis: Utah's 5-game win streak ends on road

It was the night after Christmas, and all through the Delta Center the Jazz were stirring, so much so they were able to overcome an 18-point deficit against Memphis and eventually win in overtime. Maybe, just maybe, it could happen again, the Jazz coach was thinking. An 11-2 fourth-quarter run by the Grizzlies, however, snapped Sloan back into the real world and allowed Memphis to roll past the Jazz 87-65 on Friday night at FedEx Forum %u2014 ending 16-17 Utah's five-game win streak, and marking its third-lowest scoring game of the season. "It was almost the same ballgame as we had in Salt...
