      Cleveland Wins But Worries

(Newser) - Cleveland catcher Victor Martinez was injured in a second straight home opener, and ace C.C. Sabathia and closer Joe Borowski both looked shaky, reports the Cleveland Plain Dealer . Nonetheless, the Indians prevailed against the White Sox, 10-8, on Casey Blake's three-run ninth-inning double. Chicago starter Mark Buehrle was downright woeful, exiting during a seven-run second inning. More »

      C.C. Gets the Cy

(Newser) - Leviathan Cleveland ace C.C. Sabathia won the 2007 A.L. Cy Young Award, edging out 20-game winner Josh Beckett of Boston, to whom he lost twice in the playoffs. Sabathia led the majors in innings pitched with 241, and became the first African-American pitcher to win the award since Dwight Gooden in 1985. I definitely thought it would be close and I definitely thought Josh Beckett could have won it. I'm glad it worked out this way," he said. More »

Byrd's HGH Use Was News to Mitchell

(Newser) - Baseball investigator George Mitchell denied a report that he leaked information on Cleveland pitcher Paul Byrd’s use of human growth hormone. News broke before Cleveland lost Game 7 to Boston that Byrd had bought HGH online; he said it was used to treat a pituitary tumor. Mitchell said he learned of the allegations at the same time as the public, the AP reports. More »

      Cleveland Pitcher Bought HGH

(Newser) - Paul Byrd, the pitcher who's been critical in the Cleveland Indians' successful playoff run this season, bought almost $25,000 worth of human growth hormone between 2002 and 2005, the San Francisco Chronicle learned today. Byrd admitted taking HGH, but told Fox Sports he was using it legally with a prescription. The Chronicle report, however, says two of Byrd’s prescriptions came from a dentist whose license was suspended in 2003 for fraud. More »

Indians Roll Dice For Series Lead

(Newser) - Daisuke Matsuzaka's second postseason outing for Boston last night went much like his first: he gave up four runs on six hits in 4 2/3 innings. Unlike his last appearance, Matsuzaka got the loss, as Cleveland's Jake Westbrook reigned in the Red Sox for a 4-2 defeat. The Indians now have a 2-1 lead in the best-of-seven series, reports the Providence Journal. More »

    • Spin Forward: Tribe turns table on Sox

CLEVELAND -- The scenario was familiar. Star pitcher takes the mound for big postseason start and leaves far sooner than he'd like. Opponent takes pitches, puts him behind in counts. It was the same theme in Game 3 as it was for the previous two games of the American League Championship Series. The roles, however, were reversed. If the same theme holds on Tuesday, the Red Sox are in trouble. "The more pitches you throw, especially to dangerous hitters, the better chance you give them," Red Sox manager Terry Francona said, reciting Daisuke Matsuzaka's pitch count off the top of his head. "I mean,...

      Red Sox Cruise Behind Beckett

(Newser) - Game 1 of the ALCS did not prove to be the pitching duel between Cy Young candidates that many had expected, as the Red Sox battered Cleveland starter C.C. Sabathia en-route to a 10-3 victory, the Providence Journal reports. Sabathia was rocked for eight runs in four and a third innings, while Josh Beckett coasted through six, giving up two runs on four hits. More »

      Indians Send Yankees Home

(Newser) - The Cleveland Indians took Game 4 of the ALDS, defeating the Yankees 6-4 last night to advance to the ALCS, reports the AP. While the Indians have their eye on their first World Series title since 1948, questions consume the Bronx: Will Joe Torre get the ax? Can the Yanks afford to keep their free agents? And where was Alex Rodriguez throughout this series? More »

Steinbrenner to Torre: Win or You're Fired

(Newser) - Joe Torre is one loss away from unemployment. Last night George Steinbrenner told the Bergen County Record the skipper is finished in New York unless the Yankees rally to beat the Cleveland Indians. “He's the highest-paid manager in baseball, so I don't think we'd take him back if we don't win this series,” Steinbrenner said, in a vintage threat-filled rant. Yankees Stung at Cleveland

(Newser) - The Indians lead the Yankees 2-0 in their ALDS series, following Friday night's 11-inning victory. A game which saw phenomenal pitching from starters Pettitte and Carmona  is destined to become famous for the insect swarm that arrived in the later innings. The pests certainly got to Yankee reliever Joba Chamberlain, who gave up a game tying run on a wild pitch in the eighth. More »

Red Sox Clinch Best Record in Baseball

(Newser) - J.D. Drew's clutch home run last night secured Boston's 6-4 victory over the Twins, which in turn ensured that the Red Sox will go down as having the top regular-season record in 2007. This distinction allowed the Sox to choose the longer, 8-day schedule for their playoff series against the Angels, reports MLB.com. More »

Pirates Tap Indians Assistant for GM's Job

(Newser) - The Pittsburgh Pirates named Neal Huntington as their new general manager today, nearly 3 weeks after firing Dave Littlefield. A delay in the announcement had fueled speculation they were backing away from Huntington as their first choice. His jobs in Cleveland as special assistant to Indians GM Mark Shapiro had included advance scouting and strategic planning. More »
