(Newser) - You can go home again if you're Trey Hillman. • Mailbag: Who can replace Bell?

If Joe Torre became available, do you think Dayton Moore would give him a call? -- Todd F., Wichita, Kan. Maybe to congratulate him on what has been a Hall-of-Fame career with the Yankees. Even if Torre wanted to manage elsewhere, Kansas City doesn't seem a logical destination. Not that he wouldn't fit in. I've known Torre since he played for the Cardinals, and he's always been adaptable to his surroundings. The way he's handled the Bronx Zoo, with the demands of the fans, the media, the players and, of course, the owner, has been phenomenal. Not that Torre would think he's too good for K.C....

(Newser) - Alex Rodriguez' two-run homer in the first inning yesterday boosted the Yankees to a 6-3 victory over the Kansas City Royals, and helped Yank ace Chien-Ming Wang collect his 18th win of the season . A-Rod, now with 52 home runs this season and a .583 batting average in the four-game series against the Royals, could well become the American  League's MVP. More »

      A-Rod Belts 51st Home Run

(Newser) - Alex Rodriguez reached another milestone in his outstanding season yesterday in Kansas City, knocking in his 50th and 51st home runs as the Yanks trounced the Royals 11-5. It's the first 50-plus home run season for a Yankee since 1961, when both Mickey Mantle and Roger Maris accomplished the feat. A-Rod now holds the single season record by a third baseman. More »

      A-Rod Smashes 500th Homer

(Newser) - Alex Rodriguez finally blasted his way into the 500-homer club today, becoming, at age 32 and 8 days, the youngest baseball player to hit the mark. A-Rod swatted the first pitch he saw from Kansas City Royals' Kyle Davies, belting a three-run homer at Yankee Stadium. It had been a week since he hit  #499, and the fans were ecstatic. More »

      Sox Fall to Royals, 6-5

(Newser) - Boston's Julan Tavarez threw less than six innings in a sloppy outing last night, as the Sox fell to Kansas City 6-5. With New York finding its stride, the Sox are beginning to feel some heat in the AL East, and may replace the faltering Tavarez with prospect Jon Lester in the starting rotation. Last night's game is the 14th one-run decision Boston has dropped this year. More »

Matsuzaka Fires Gem in Much-Hyped Debut

(Newser) - The Red Sox's $103-million man Daisuke Matsuzaka lived up to the hype last night, holding the Kansas City Royals to just one run on six hits in his Major League debut. In front of 200 Japanese media members, Matsuzaka dazzled the Royals hitters with a power fastball and his famed array of off-speed pitches, leading the Sox to a 4-1 victory. More »
