Rodriguez wriggled out of a bases-loaded jam in the 10th inning, Mike Napoli hit two early homers before scoring the go-ahead run in the 12th and the Los Angeles Angels avoided another playoff sweep by beating the Boston Red Sox, 5-4, early this morning. The Angels—who entered tonight's games with a whopping 11½-game lead in the American League West and are clearly aimed at making a World Series run—sent infielder Casey Kotchman and minor league pitcher Steve Marek to Atlanta. Pierzynski's RBI double capped a three-run second against Jon Garland, and the Chicago White Sox beat the Los Angeles Angels 4-3 last night. Pierzynski led off the ninth with his third hit, a double against Angels closer Francisco Rodriguez (0-1). Prior to last night he was 0-13 in the series. More »

Shields (4-2) rebounded from the second-shortest outing of his career to post his second shutout in his past three starts.
