      Braves Trade Renteria for Prospects

The Tigers have signaled that the future is now; with the window closing on last year's AL champions, Detroit has traded two stellar prospects for the veteran bat and glove of Edgar Renteria. Atlanta will receive righty fireballer Jair Jurrjens, 21, and outfielder Gorkys Hernandez, 20, who hit .293 and stole 54 bases with Class A last year. More »

Schuerholz Will Leave Post As Braves' GM

Atlanta Braves' General Manager John Schuerholz is moving up to become president of the franchise, the Atlanta Journal Constitution reports. He will be succeeded by assistant GM Frank Wren, Braves' CEO Tim McGuirk announced today. Braves Won't Re-Sign Outfielder Andruw Jones

Andruw Jones’ won’t play for the Braves next season, after Atlanta GM John Schuerholz said the club won't bid for the center fielder's services now that he's a free agent, because of the high salary demands of Jones’ agent, Scott Boras. Schuerholz wouldn’t reveal the specific numbers Boras wanted, but described them as “top tier,” reports the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. More »

    • Being chasers is odd for Braves

ATLANTA -- The final month of the season has always been quite easy for the Braves to tackle, but during the last two seasons, September has finally decided to fight back. During their record string of 14 straight division titles from 1991-2005, Atlanta found itself not in first place at the start of September just twice, in 1993 and 2000, when they trailed by just half a game. In 1993, the Braves won 22 of their 30 games in September and October to catch the Giants in the National League West and finish 104-58. In fact, 2000, 1993 and 1991 were the only three years during their run of dominance...

    • Hudson helping make wishes come true

ATLANTA -- As Tim Hudson was making his way toward the Majors, he and his wife, Kim, envisioned becoming involved in many charitable endeavors. A little more than a month into his big league career, a young girl named Miranda, who was suffering from a brain tumor, provided them the realization that they wanted to make a difference with the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Sitting in an Oakland-area Applebee's that 1999 evening, the Hudsons heard Miranda talk about her dream of seeing Disney World and discuss the financial realities that would likely limit her to instead attend a Sacramento Kings game. "It...

    • Diaz's double drives in winning run in Braves' rally vs. Phils

ATLANTA (AP) -- The Braves will have a hard time making the playoffs, despite their most remarkable comeback of the season. So they went ahead and celebrated as though this one was for a championship. Matt Diaz capped an improbable rally with a two-out, three-run double in the ninth inning, giving Atlanta a 9-8 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies on Wednesday. The Phillies squandered leads of 5-0 and 8-2, giving up four runs in the eighth and watching in disbelief as Diaz's liner skidded off the tip of "I'm not believing that," said Philadelphia manager Charlie Manuel, whose team remained...

    • Frustrated Chipper calls out umpires

It might be the frustration of the Braves' dwindling playoff hopes or just a plain bone to pick, but Chipper Jones fired off at major-league umpires following the Braves 5-2 loss to the Philadelphia Phillies on Tuesday, saying they "ought to be ashamed" and calling Friday night's home-plate umpire Rick Reed's strike zone "a joke." He argued on behalf of Braves hitters %u2014 whose frustration culminated with a third-strike call on Yunel Escobar in the ninth inning that sent towels flying in the Braves dugout and got bench player Brayan Pena ejected. He argued on behalf of pitcher Buddy Carlyle,...

      Teixeira Has Brave New Start

Slugger Mark Teixeira was a smash in his first Atlanta performance last night, chalking up a three-run blast to lead the Braves to a 12-3 win over Houston. Teixeira, whom Atlanta nabbed in a multi-player deal with Texas this week, was 1-4 with a walk and 4 RBIs, an inaugural performance good enough to bring a full house of 30,000 to its feet. More »

      Franco Returns 'Home' to Atlanta

Giving new meaning to the term "senior circuit," 48-year-old Julio Franco returned to Atlanta last night and drove in two runs in a 10-1 rout of St. Louis. Cut loose by the Mets on July 12, Franco says he's glad to be "home" with the Braves, who won five division championships with the slugger before releasing him in 2005. More »

      Smoltz Stones Mets for Milestone

Facing off against former teammate Tom Glavine, do-it-all Braves righty John Smoltz prevailed again for his 200th win—the most for any player with 150 saves or more. Smoltz was converted to a closer in 2001 and back to a starter in 2005, and his 154 saves are an Atlanta team record. More »
