      Braves Prez Calls Furcal's Dealings 'Despicable'

      (AP) - Braves president John Schuerholz has vowed to never again do business with Rafael Furcal's agents, whom Schuerholz has accused of conducting "despicable" dealings with the team, the AP reports. Schuerholz and Braves general manager Frank Wren were quoted as saying the Wasserman Media Group negotiated dishonestly by taking the team's signed terms of agreement sheet for Furcal to the Los Angeles Dodgers, who then reached a preliminary agreement Wednesday to re-sign the shortstop.       Maddux Will Hang 'Em Up: 'I'm Getting Too Old'

      (Newser) - Four-time Cy Young winner Greg Maddux confirmed today that his 355th win was his last, the Las Vegas Sun reports. “I’m 42, and I have two kids and a wife,” said the eight-time all-star, who finished his 23-year career with a stint on the Los Angeles Dodgers. "I’m getting too old, and my kids are getting too old. It’s a combination of those two.” He plans to retire publicly in Las Vegas on Monday. More »

      (AP) - The Los Angeles Angels acquired slugging first baseman Mark Teixeira from the Atlanta Braves today, a trade that further bolsters the team with the best record in the major leagues. The Angels—who entered tonight's games with a whopping 11½-game lead in the American League West and are clearly aimed at making a World Series run—sent infielder Casey Kotchman and minor league pitcher Steve Marek to Atlanta.       Braves Fan Dies in Upper-Deck Fall

      (Newser) - An Atlanta Braves fan died after plummeting from the upper deck at Atlanta’s Turner Field, WSBTV.com reports. The 25-year-old man fell to the field-level concourse behind home plate during the bottom of the 8th inning in last night’s game against the New York Mets, a police rep said; he was pronounced dead at a hospital soon afterward.       (Newser) - Freddy Sanchez singled home Brian Bixler with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning, giving the Pittsburgh Pirates a 3-2 win over the Atlanta Braves tonight. Sanchez went 2-for-4 with three RBIs and is 9-for-17 in four games since being moved to the top of the Pirates' lineup. John Grabow (2-1) struck out one in a scoreless ninth to earn the win. More »

      (Newser) - The Atlanta Braves finally won a one-run game when Matt Diaz hit a bases-loaded single in the ninth to beat the San Diego Padres 5-4. Atlanta was the first team since the 2000 Houston Astros to lose its first nine one-run games. The Braves were the only team in the major leagues without such a victory. More »

      (Newser) - Chipper Jones hit his 10th homer, Jair Jurrjens pitched six strong innings and the Atlanta Braves beat the San Diego Padres 5-3 to improve the NL's best home record. Mark Kotsay added two hits, including a homer. Kotsay also delivered the defensive play of the game in the fifth inning, making an over-the-shoulder catch at the warning track of Tadahito Iguchi's drive. More »

      (Newser) - The Atlanta Braves made it easy for Jo-Jo Reyes to win his 2008 debut. Reyes gave up one run in 5 1/3 innings, and Atlanta broke open a close game with a six-run seventh to beat the Cincinnati Reds 9-1 last night. Reyes (1-0), recalled from Triple-A Richmond for the start in place of the injured John Smoltz, gave up four hits and one run in 5 1/3 innings. More »
