      Piazza Retires After 16 Seasons

      (Newser) - The most prolific hitting catcher of all-time is hanging up his spikes. After 16 years, Mike Piazza is calling it a career, one that saw him amass a .308 lifetime batting average and 427 homeruns; 396 of those dingers came as a catcher, which is the most all time, reports AP.       Tomko, Soria Help Royals Beat Slumping Marlins

      (Newser) - Brett Tomko pitched six innings Friday for his first victory in nearly six weeks, and two unearned runs helped the Kansas City Royals extend their winning streak to five games by beating the slumping Florida Marlins 7-6. Closer Joakim Soria allowed a run for the first time this season when he gave up a two-run homer to Jeremy Hermida in the ninth. More »

      Reds Hook Marlins 7-6 in Extras

      (Newser) - The Cincinnati Reds blew a six-run lead in the ninth, but Paul Janish singled home the tiebreaking run in only his second big-league at-bat for a 7-6, 10-inning victory over the Florida Marlins on Wednesday night. Renyel Pinto (1-2) walked two with two outs before Janish, who arrived from the minors earlier in the day, singled to right field to end it, raising his right fist in triumph. More »

      Volquez, Votto Lead Reds Over Marlins

      (Newser) - Edinson Volquez pitched six effective innings, Joey Votto homered and the Cincinnati Reds earned a costly 5-3 victory over the Florida Marlins on Tuesday night. Reds shortstop Jeff Keppinger fouled a pitch off his leg in the second and X-rays revealed a broken left kneecap. He drew a bases-loaded walk to make it 2-0 and played defense in the third and fourth innings before departing. More »

      (Newser) - Ricky Nolasco joined the first-place Florida Marlins' win parade with six strong innings, and Luis Gonzalez passed the 1,400 career RBIs mark with a bases-loaded double last night in a 7-3 victory over the Washington Nationals. Nolasco (2-3) broke a personal three-game losing streak, getting his first win in nearly a month, as the Marlins ran their winning streak to a season-high five games. More »

      (Newser) - Matt Treanor achieved a career high in RBIs with one swing last night, hitting a three-run homer to help the Florida Marlins complete a three-game sweep by beating Milwaukee 7-2. Jorge Cantu also homered for Florida, who won their fourth game in a row and matched their best start after 34 games (20-14). Florida's Luis Gonzalez went 3-for-3 and finished the series 7-for-11.       (Newser) - Jake Peavy won for the first time in more than three weeks and Tadahito Iguchi hit the go-ahead two-run double to help the San Diego Padres defeat the Florida Marlins 7-2 on last night. Peavy (4-1) allowed two runs, five hits, walked two and struck out eight in 5 2/3 innings. It was the 2007 National League Cy Young Award winner's first win since April 11. More »

      (Newser) - Dan Uggla hit two home runs, Mark Hendrickson pitched seven effective innings and the Florida Marlins beat the San Diego Padres 6-4 on Friday. Uggla's second homer, a three-run shot off Justin Germano that traveled over the left-field scoreboard, was followed by a homer from Luis Gonzalez.       (Newser) - Prince Fielder hit a go-ahead solo home run in the eighth inning and also had an RBI single to power the Milwaukee Brewers past the Florida Marlins 4-3 last night. Fielder's fourth home run of the season, a mammoth shot to dead center off reliever Renyel Pinto (1-1), broke a 3-3 tie in the bottom of the eighth.       (Newser) - Hanley Ramirez raced home on a grounder to short with the infield in to score the game's first run and the Florida Marlins beat the Milwaukee Brewers 3-0 in 10 innings Friday. With one out and the infield playing for a play at the plate, Wes Helms hit a ground ball to shortstop J.J. Hardy but Ramirez beat Hardy's throw home. More »
