      Wainwright, Cardinals Beat Nationals

(Newser) - Adam Wainwright completed a dominating first time around for the St. Louis Cardinals' injury-depleted rotation, working eight strong innings in a 5-4 victory over the Washington Nationals today. Yadier Molina had two hits and two RBIs and Wainwright also drove in a run from the eighth spot in the lineup, where manager Tony La Russa is again placing his pitcher. More »

The surprising Cardinals are 3-1, two games above .500 for the first time since the end of the 2006 season, and handed the Nationals their second straight loss after a 3-0 start. More »

    • Nats wish they can play Mets every day

WASHINGTON -- Warning: Don't ever call the Nationals spoilers in front of manager Manny Acta, even though his team is playing the Mets and Phillies in the final 11 games of the season. Spoiling New York's and Philadelphia's chances of missing the playoffs, however, is not the first thing on Acta's mind. His No. 1 goal is to win as many games as possible and prevent Washington from finishing in last place for the fourth consecutive season. A fourth-place finish would mean that the Nationals are making positive steps toward winning a championship in the future. Right now, the Nats are three games...

    • 'Two minds are better than one'

WASHINGTON -- At first glance, the two do not share much in common. Nationals manager Manny Acta is completing his first season in charge of a Major League team. He's optimistic at all times, refusing to allow the score to dictate how he acts in the clubhouse. Bench coach Pat Corrales, who turned 67 years old in the spring, has spent the better part of that time in big league dugouts. Corrales admits that he's not always the best at handling mistakes, getting emotional when he sees something go awry on the field. Yet the two have formed a successful managing team during the season, which is...

    • Francoeur, Braves start Nats' final RFK homestand with loss

WASHINGTON (AP) -- By the looks of this game, RFK Stadium is not quite ready to say goodbye to baseball just yet. And the Atlanta Braves are not quite ready to give up hope of a late run to make the playoffs. Jeff Francoeur's bases-loaded single in the 13th inning drove in two runs and led Atlanta to a rain-soaked 8-5 victory over Washington on Friday night in the opening game of the Nationals' final homestand at the aging park with the bouncing stands. "Wow, what a night, eh? Started late. It rained the whole game. And we end up winning in the 13th," Braves manager Bobby Cox said. Then he...

    • Nationals outlast Bucs in lengthy affair

WASHINGTON -- Nominally, Wednesday's game between the Nationals and Pirates lasted two hours and 59 minutes, but a two-hour, eight-minute rain delay in the third inning meant that the players and personnel assembled got to spend some extra, albeit soggy time at the ballpark. The Nationals proved it was worth the wait as they edged the Pirates, 3-2, in front of 31,213 at RFK Stadium. The Nationals have now won 14 of their last 15 games at home and improved their overall record to 46-31. They remain in first place in the National League East, 3 1/2 games ahead of the Braves. It was the same formula...
