HOUSTON -- The Astros accepted long ago that they weren't getting to the postseason this year, but on Monday, it became official. They have 12 more games to play, and after losing to the Brewers, 6-0, they are 13 1/2 games back. That means the Astros are the first team in the National League Central eliminated from the division race. That news created little more than a murmur in a sedate clubhouse following the home team's seventh shutout loss of the year. Lance Berkman chose to look at the bright side, putting this season in a big-picture perspective. "We've had a terrible year, but tomorrow...

The Cubs edged a half game ahead of Milwaukee in the heated National League Central race last night, shelling the Astros' Woody Williams (8-15) for six runs on four longballs to Houston's two. Chicago's defense stepped it up as well, pulling in key double plays to help Steve Trachsel lock down his first win in eight years for the Cubs, writes the AP. More »

The Astros released manager Phil Garner and general manager Tim Purpura yesterday, temporarily replacing them with bench coach Cecil Cooper and the president of operations Tal Smith. The Astros, who have sunk to 58-73 under Garner and Purpura, are tied with Pittsburgh for last place in the National League Central, and owner Drayton McLane says it's "time for a change." More »

Beleaguered Astros starter Jason Jennings came through as a pinch-hitter last night, driving in Jason Lane in the top of the 14th to down the Braves. Houston pitchers had tried mightily to give the game away: Woody Williams allowed seven runs in five frames, and closer Brad Lidge blew a save on a two-run homer in the 12th. More »

After just two woeful outings, Astros closer Brad Lidge has been demoted to middle reliever. His close friend Dan Wheeler will take his place as Houston's ninth-inning man. This will feel like deja vu to Lidge; he lost his closer's job twice last year as well. More »

Albert Pujols’s hibernating bat woke up last night, as the 2005 NL MVP hit his first homer of the young season. The Cardinals crushed the Astros 10-1 in Houston after getting off to a slow start, thanks in large part to Pujols' 1-for-17 skid. More »

I've noticed that the Astros' Spring Training record isn't the best. Pretty far from good if you ask me. Should I be worried or is this just because the Astros are still warming up to the season and are using some new players? -- Emily S., Alexandria, Va. I wouldn't put too much stock into spring records, although it would be nice to see the Astros win a few more here and there. It's more important to look at how the games were lost. The Astros could lose by five runs, but a closer look at the box score shows that while the regular players were in the game, they were actually up by two. By the...

DENVER -- Count on Roy Oswalt to try to one-up Roger Clemens. A day after Clemens conquered Coors Field with seven brilliant innings versus the Rockies during which he allowed one run, Oswalt did the Rocket one better, throwing seven shutout frames in the Astros' 7-1 win over the Rockies before 23,494 on Wednesday afternoon. The win capped a series victory that highlighted three days of good Astros pitching in the thin air, minus Garrett Atkins' game-winning grand slam off Russ Springer Tuesday. In a ballpark where a pitcher would be happy giving up eight runs as long as his team scores nine,...
