      Suspended Manny Nears All-Star Spot

(Newser) - Despite his 50-game suspension for performance-enhancing drug use, Manny Ramirez is in the running for a spot in the All-Star game, currently just 30,000 votes shy of an outfield post, New York magazine reports. While the media’s upset about it, the Dodgers’ owner likes the idea, and a "Vote for Manny" blog aims to get him on the team. More »

(Newser) - Manny Ramirez met with his Dodgers teammates today to personally apologize for flunking a drug test and drawing a 50-game suspension, the Los Angeles Times reports. Team management had encouraged the outfielder to talk with the squad. “He knows he made a mistake. I forgive him,” third baseman Casey Blake said. “It's his business.” More »

'Embarrassed' Manny 'Beat Up' Over Test: Torre

(Newser) - Suspended slugger Manny Ramirez is "embarrassed" and "still beat up" over his failed drug test and 50-game suspension, Joe Torre told the Los Angeles Times . "It's not that he thinks it's unfair," Torre added. The Dodgers skipper talked to Ramirez yesterday. A source said Ramirez may finally face his teammates during their six-game road trip beginning Tuesday in Philadelphia.  More »

Dodgers Have No Way Out of Manny Deal

(Newser) - The Los Angeles Dodgers don’t have many options in dealing with confirmed doper Manny Ramirez, Sean Gregory writes in Time . Manny’s 50-game suspension is governed entirely by the drug agreement between the players association and Major League Baseball. There is no contract clause allowing the Dodgers to cancel the deal over drugs—though they don’t have to pay him while he’s suspended, a savings of $8 million. More »

      Manny's Drug Excuses Don't Wash

(Newser) - The only Hall of Fame that Manny Ramirez is now likely to find himself in is the one for lame excuses, Phil Rogers writes in the Chicago Tribune . Unless Ramirez, who says he flunked a drug test because of "a personal health issue," wanted to get pregnant or had some other legitimate reason for taking a female fertility drug, he looks certain to join the ranks of baseball's fallen stars, Rogers writes. Ramirez Flunks Drug Test, Draws 50-Game Ban

(Newser) - Manny Ramirez has tested positive for a banned substance and will be suspended for 50 games beginning immediately, the Los Angeles Times reports. Reports have identified the substance as HCG, a drug commonly used to treat female infertility but also taken to raise testosterone levels at the end of steroid treatments. The substance is intended to boost sex drive and "is not a steroid and it is not human-growth hormone," a source told Yahoo Sports. The suspension runs through July 3 and will cost Ramirez nearly $8 million. More »

$1.5B Yanks MLB's Most Valuable Team

(Newser) - The New York Yankees' $1.5 billion valuation lands them solidly in the top spot in the Forbes ranking of baseball's most valuable teams. The crosstown Mets came second, trailing by almost $600 million. The Yanks, however, were one of only two teams to lose money last season, dropping $3.7 million. The Detroit Tigers lost a whopping $26.3 million. More »

Manny Back in LA for 2 Years, $45M

(Newser) - Manny Ramirez will be back with the Los Angeles Dodgers for at least a year after contentious contract negotiations, the Los Angeles Times reports. The 37-year-old slugger, pending a physical, will sign a $45 million contract for 2 years, with an opt-out clause after the first year and a $25 million payout. “I know how people treated me in LA,” Ramirez said. “And I want to thank them.” The deal includes a no-trade clause. Dodgers Turn Down New Manny Offer

(Newser) - The Los Angeles Dodgers tossed aside another counter-offer from Manny Ramirez's agent today, the Los Angeles Times reports. Sounding testy and calling the talks "a distraction" from spring training, team owner Frank McCourt said the two sides would "start from scratch" in negotiations. "And you know what? The world isn't anything like it was in November," he said, referring to the economic crisis. More »

      Public Feud Bruising Manny, Dodgers

(Newser) - Teams don’t usually publicize their offers to players, but the Dodgers have publicized their offer to Manny Ramirez—in fact, they’ve publicized all four of them. And so LA is embroiled in a bizarre spring training, dominated by an ongoing negotiation/feud with a player who isn’t there. “I don’t recall a more public negotiation with an athlete in recent Los Angeles history,” a USC sports business professor tells the LA Times. Manny Rejects Dodgers' $45M Offer

(Newser) - The Dodgers sent out an angry mass email last night, titled “Boras Rejects Dodgers Offer to Manny,” complaining that agent Scott Boras had shot down yet another offer—this time for a two-year, $45 million deal. But Boras says he didn’t reject the offer, he simply made a counter offer—for a two-year, $45 million deal. Confused? The devil is in the fine print, the LA Times reports. More »

Torre Tell-All Has Yanks Mulling Gag Rule

(Newser) - Joe Torre’s new book about his tenure as Yankees manager has the franchise in such a tizzy that the front office is considering a “non-disparagement clause” in future contracts, Newsday reports. Unlike other teams, the Yankees have never insisted on confidentiality agreements with players and management. “Up to now, we have always operated our employer-employee relationships on a basis of trust,” one official said. Braves Prez Calls Furcal's Dealings 'Despicable'

(AP) - Braves president John Schuerholz has vowed to never again do business with Rafael Furcal's agents, whom Schuerholz has accused of conducting "despicable" dealings with the team, the AP reports. Schuerholz and Braves general manager Frank Wren were quoted as saying the Wasserman Media Group negotiated dishonestly by taking the team's signed terms of agreement sheet for Furcal to the Los Angeles Dodgers, who then reached a preliminary agreement Wednesday to re-sign the shortstop. Dodgers Return Home Cooking, Down Phillies, 7-2

(Newser) - The Dodgers cut Philadelphia's NLCS lead to 2-1 tonight, riding a 5-run first inning and the mental boost of a bench-clearing standoff to a 7-2 victory in front of a record Dodger Stadium crowd of 56,800. The teams exchanged errant pitches in the second and third innings before the benches and bullpens emptied for a spell of shouting and sniping but no violence or ejections, the LA Times reports. Phillies Take 2-0 Lead Into 'Mannywood'

(AP) - Of all those big hitters in Philadelphia's potent lineup, no one ever expected pitcher Brett Myers to put them in control of the NL championship series with his bat, the AP reports. Myers did better at the plate than on the mound, going 3-for-3 with three RBIs, Shane Victorino drove in four runs and the Phillies overcame another homer by Manny Ramirez to beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 8-5 today for a 2-0 lead in the best-of-seven NLCS. Dodgers Make It 2-0

(Newser) - A Cubs defensive collapse in the 5-run second inning helped the Dodgers to a 10-3 win in Game 2 of their NL series, the Chicago Tribune reports. Sloppy infielding behind Carlo Zambrano tied the division series record for errors. The Cubs—who have never won a playoff game west of Chicago—now head to Los Angeles two games down. More »

      Sox, Dodgers, Phillies Win Openers

(Newser) - Jason Bay and Manny Ramirez both proved why they’d been acquired last night. Bay hit a two-run shot to give the Red Sox a lead they never relinquished, sending Anaheim to a 4-1 defeat, while the man he was traded for hit a solo shot in the Dodgers' 7-2 win over the Cubs. But the Dodgers’ real hero was James Loney, who hit a grand slam in the fifth to erase a 2-run Cubs lead. More »

Bizarre Video Review Tips Giants Game

(Newser) - There’s no crying in baseball, but there are plenty of furrowed brows today after last night’s bizarre Dodgers-Giants game. The Giants replaced him with pinch runner Emmanuel Burriss, but still argued the call, sparking a grueling 14-minute video review. More »
