Save the Trauma Excuses: You Failed on 9/11

(Newser) - Ironically, Dick Cheney and Condoleezza Rice have defended their post-9/11 decisions by appealing for empathy, arguing that only those in charge on that bleak day could understand. “I have little sympathy for this argument,” Richard Clarke, who was there, retorts in a withering piece for the Washington Post , blaming them for ignoring pre-9/11 intel warning of an imminent al-Qaeda attack. Torture Convictions Would Be a Long Shot

(Newser) - Those calling for Bush administration prosecutions on torture-related grounds may have their way—but whether those in question can actually be convicted is a whole other kettle of fish, Jeffrey Rosen writes in New York . Much of the case would likely hinge on whether authorities believed their own claims in making a case for waterboarding. And appointing a special prosecutor could create headaches for the Justice Department. More »

4th Grader Grills Condi on Torture

(Newser) - A fourth grader took Condoleezza Rice to task on torture yesterday, asking her about President Obama's criticism of "methods" used by the Bush administration. The question— drafted with the help of teachers—was toned down from what the student originally planned to say, the Washington Post notes. The child wanted to ask: "If you would work for Obama's administration, would you push for torture?" More »

Condi Was First to OK Waterboarding

(Newser) - Condoleezza Rice played a greater role than she has acknowledged in the CIA's harsh interrogation program, and approved the use of waterboarding, according to a newly released report from the Senate Intelligence Committee. The report finds that Rice, as national security adviser, verbally approved the CIA's request to waterboard a captured al-Qaeda member in 2002, making her the first known Bush adminstration official to do so. Bush and Condi Find Something to Celebrate

(Newser) - India and Pakistan are at loggerheads, Afghanistan is a narco-state, and the Middle East is almost unspeakably troubled—so how did George W. Bush's diplomatic team see off their president? With yesterday's "Ceremony to Commemorate Foreign Policy Achievements," a State Department lovefest complete with billowing flags and commemorative plaques. As Dana Milbank of the Washington Post notes, the lack of actual achievements kept the ceremony short, but there was no shortage of adulation. More »

Olmert: I Made Condi Abstain on Gaza Vote

(Newser) - Israel’s prime minister says an urgent call to President Bush last week resulted in Condoleezza Rice changing her vote on a UN Gaza resolution, the New York Times reports, with Ehud Olmert adding that the secretary of State “was left pretty embarrassed.” Rice helped draft the measure urging peace, which passed 14-0 with the US abstaining; a State spokesman said that was always the plan. Team of Rivals Starting to Crack

(Newser) - Separate visits to the State Department by Hillary Clinton and Susan Rice yesterday suggest that the rift between Barack Obama’s two highest-level diplomats may not have healed, reports the AP. Rice, the incoming UN ambassador, bucked her former Clinton administration bosses to support Obama in the primaries. Now she’ll technically be a Clinton subordinate, though Obama may elevate her position to Cabinet-level status. More »

(Newser) - Pakistan is prepared to take urgent action against terrorists, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said after talks with leaders today. Rice is to meet with Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, who is under heavy political pressure to respond firmly to last week's Mumbai terror attacks. Pakistan denies any involvement in the attacks, but officials have warned that worsening relations between the nuclear-armed rivals may force the military to shift troops to the Indian border. Rice Could Be Lone Survivor of Bush Years

(Newser) - Condoleezza Rice might be the lone Bush confidante to escape with a political career intact, Marc Hujer writes in Der Spiegel , ironic because if “anyone, besides Bush …ought to be held accountable for the failings of the current administration, it is Rice.” As national security adviser then secretary of state, Rice was involved in all foreign policy decisions, yet she’s retained her popularity.
