      Usual Suspects to Host Debates

(Newser) - The moderators for the three presidential debates have been announced, and none of them are particularly gasp-inducing, the Swamp reports. Tom Brokaw, interim host of Meet the Press, Jim Lehrer, of PBS’ News Hour , and Bob Schieffer of CBS’ Face the Nation, will each host a debate, while Gwen Ifill, also of PBS, drew the single vice-presidential face-off. The first debate will be September 26. More »

Left Out of Prez Debates, New Orleans Goes Online

(Newser) - Overlooked by the commission that schedules presidential debates, New Orleans has enlisted Google and YouTube in organizing its own forum, the Times-Picayune reports. The Sept. 18 event, 8 days before the first official debate, is intended to bring the political spotlight to the beleaguered city. Gov. Bobby Jindal touted it as "a discussion of many challenges facing not just New Orleans and the Gulf Coast, but our entire country." More »

      Clinton Calls for Moderator-Free Debate

(Newser) - Hillary Clinton wants one last debate before the Indiana and North Carolina primaries next month, and she’s ready to do it Lincoln-Douglas style. “After the last debate, Sen. Obama’s supporters complained a little about the tough questions,” Clinton told a crowd in South Bend today. “I’m offering Senator Obama a chance to debate me, one-on-one, no moderators.” More »

Stephanopoulos Sticks Up for Tone of ABC Debate

(Newser) - George Stephanopolous has drawn fire for posing too many "gotcha" questions at last night's Democratic presidential debate on ABC, but the pundit is sticking to his guns. Stephanopolous says he didn't focus on electability over policy issues by accident. "It's not only, who will be the best president, but who has the best chance of winning," he told Talking Points Memo. More »

      ABC Debate Hosts 'Shoddy, Despicable'

(Newser) - No winner emerged in last night's Democratic presidential debate, but for one columnist the loser was clear: ABC News. Over the course of a commercial-crammed broadcast, moderators Charlie Gibson and George Stephanopolous dwelled on petty half-controversies to incite Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama to get nasty, writes Tom Shales of the Washington Post . Democrats Face Off in Philly

(Newser) - Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama squared off in a Philadelphia debate tonight less than a week ahead of Pennsylvania's primary, and the recent flap over Obama's "bitter" comments took center stage early. Clinton noted that she's the granddaughter of a factory worker and that her family wouldn't "cling to religion" if it were upset with Washington, the New York Times reports. "That's a fundamental misunderstanding of the role of religion and faith," she said. More »

Vendors to Clinton: Don't Be a Deadbeat

(Newser) - Hillary Clinton’s campaign is earning a deadbeat reputation among some campaign vendors, reports Politico. To keep pace with Obama and maintain reserves for future media buys and events, it has put off paying hundreds of bills, leaving many—mostly small and local—businesses grousing. Clinton ended February with $16 million in primary funds, including $5 million of her own money, and $8.7 million in unpaid bills. More »

      Wounded Hillary Marches On

(Newser) - With Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign on the ropes, morale is low and advisers are screaming at each other in back rooms, the New York Times reports. While the candidate appears resolute, she no longer expresses the supreme confidence she once did and has stopped prefacing sentences with "when I'm president." Some advisers regret using Bill Clinton so much and concede Hillary's race may end after the Texas and Ohio Democratic primaries. More »

      Dems Square Off in Texas

(Newser) - Hillary Clinton tonight declared that "actions speak louder than words" as she sought to stem Barack Obama's political momentum in a Texas debate. She razzed him for using another politician's words in recent speeches—calling it "change you can Xerox"—and called his health plan inadequate. Obama objected to the "let's get real" theme of Cllnton's overall message, saying it implied that his millions of supporters are "delusional." More »

      Dream Team? Dream On: Dowd

(Newser) - Think you saw the beginning of a beautiful Dream Team friendship at the last Democratic debate? Think again, New York Times columnist Maureen Dowd says: Hillary Clinton has no more desire to be Barack's running mate than he does hers. Why would Hillary want to play second fiddle to a "political natural"—again? And why would Barack want to be Al Gore? More »

Paul, Obama Score Highest in MTV Debate

(Newser) - Four White House hopefuls were beamed in to MTV's "Closing Arguments" debate in New York tonight and one took first place in "instant" polling: Ron Paul. His stand for friendly foreign relations won over 73% of those polled, and roughly half promised him their vote. Barack Obama fared second-best with roughly 50/50 splits on issues from gay marriage to the draft, while Hillary Clinton and Mike Huckabee inspired fewest clicks among presumably young online voters. Clinton, Obama Go One-on-One

(Newser) - Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama squared off in a cordial but substantive debate tonight, their first one-on-one forum of the campaign, the AP reports. "One of us two will be the next president of the United States," said Obama, who later added that the nation needs a president who can inspire rather than just manage. Clinton emphasized the need for someone who can start on "day one." She said it took one Clinton to clean up after the first Bush and will take another to clean up after the second. More »

McCain, Romney Spar in California Debate

(Newser) - Mitt Romney took aim at John McCain's conservative credentials at a debate in California tonight, looking for a chink in the front-runner's armor less than a week before Super Tuesday, the AP reports. McCain, endorsed by Rudy Giuliani hours earlier, shrugged off the attack. The two also sparred on Iraq, with Romney denying he ever backed a timetable for withdrawal and accusing McCain of "dirty tricks" for suggesting he did. McCain insisted he's correct. More »

Republicans Seek Edge in Calm Florida Debate

(Newser) - The GOP debate in Florida remained a largely civil affair last night, with the leading candidates agreeing that the economy needs aggressive tax cuts and that Hillary Clinton has no business returning to the White House, the AP reports. In one of the few bits of drama, Mitt Romney took John McCain to task for voting against Bush's first tax cuts. McCain responded that it was the right move at the time and said he was "very proud" of his record as a fiscal conservative. More »

Obama Parries 2 Clintons in Harsh, Personal Debate

(Newser) - Last night's acrimonious Democratic presidential debate saw Barack Obama confront an increasingly aggressive Hillary Clinton, reports the Washington Post , but the Illinois senator was really countering two Clintons at once. Over the past two weeks Bill has led the charge against Obama's credibility and record, most notoriously with his "fairy tale" remark, and last night Obama retorted, "I can't tell who I'm running against sometimes." Dem Debaters Get Feisty

(Newser) - Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama drowned out policy talk in a South Carolina presidential debate tonight as they bickered over Ronald Reagan and what Obama called Clinton's "corporate" past, CNN reports. On economic policy, they wrangled over Senate votes as much as subprime bailout plans. “This kind of squabbling, how many kids are going to get health care from this?" John Edwards asked. More »

Dems Cancel LA Debate Over Strike

(Newser) - Wary of crossing picket lines, the Democratic National Committee today backed out of a presidential debate scheduled to air next month on CBS stations, citing the ongoing strike by TV and film scriptwriters.
