Romney 2008

A Mormon took aim at the White House. But it might have been his flip flopping, not his religion, that kept him from the Oval Office.

Republican Mitt Romney has all the credentials you'd want in a president. He's charismatic, has two Harvard degrees, saved the 2002 Olympics, and finessed the most liberal state in America to elect a Republican. But Romney, a Mormon, tested the country's religious tolerance, as well as its memory. Setting out on the path between Massachusetts and Washington, he's flipped or flopped on divisive social issues: gay rights, for instance, and abortion, on which he's had a "genuine change of heart." But will his conservative social positions make him an attractive VP candidate for McCain?

      Romney Blasts Liberal Washington

(Newser) - Mitt Romney, once a top contender for each of the top spots on the Republican ticket, took to the stage tonight to shore up John McCain's conservative credentials and hammer home the point that "liberals don't have a clue," CNN reports. "We need change all right, change from a liberal Washington to a conservative Washington," he said. The McCain-Palin ticket, he added, "will never allow America to retreat in the face of religious extremism." More »

      Party's Not Over for Romney

(Newser) - Mitt Romney won’t share a ticket with John McCain, but the former Massachusetts governor’s political future is still rosy, the Boston Herald reports. “He’s a very viable candidate,” one expert said, whether for a Cabinet post in a McCain administration—Treasury or Commerce, perhaps—or another run for president in 2012. But all agree he won’t be welcome in Massachusetts again. More »

Rove to Lieberman: Drop the VP Run

(Newser) - Preaching to the GOP from his Fox News seat isn't enough for Karl Rove, Politico reports. The ex-Bush strategist called Joe Lieberman last week to convince him to withdraw his name from VP consideration; Lieberman laughed off the call and hasn't called it quits just yet. Rove's guy is Mitt Romney. “Rove is pushing Romney so aggressively some folks are beginning to wonder what's going on,” says one GOP strategist. More »

McCain will reportedly inform his vice-presidential pick tomorrow, then unveil his choice to the nation on Friday. The two are then expected to campaign in battleground states this weekend, ahead of the GOP convention on Monday. Speculation remains centered on Mitt Romney, Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty, and political chameleon Joe Lieberman. More »

      Romney Rips Biden

(Newser) - Behaving more and more like John MCain's still-unnamed running mate, Mitt Romney yesterday tore into Joe Biden, reports the Washington Post . “His record being wrong on foreign policy is as long as his years in foreign policy,” zinged Romney. When asked if he was ready to debate Biden, Romney called the senator an "impenetrable thicket of words. I don't know if anyone is ready to debate him." More »

      Democrats Take Aim at Romney

(Newser) - From the way Democrats are acting, they might believe Mitt Romney is the front-runner to become John McCain’s running mate, Alexander Burns writes in Politico. Denver is abuzz with attacks on the former Massachusetts governor: Barack Obama’s campaign manager called Romney a “job-killing machine,” and Deval Patrick, who has Romney’s old job, pointed out the Republican’s neglect of that position. The complaint offers a rare glimpse into the machinery of corporate donations. In emails seen by the Journal , Huron Group’s CEO asks employees to back the Republican. “This is just business and the way business works,” he writes. More »

Many also don’t trust the Mormon Romney to oppose same-sex marriage. More »

      Romney Gains Ground in Veepstakes

(Newser) - Mitt Romney’s business acumen, national profile, and fundraising chops have put him among the elite of VP hopefuls, Reuters reports. And while he and John McCain exchanged nasty barbs during the primaries, the mutual resentment seems to have subsided, at least on the surface. "Mitt and Ann Romney and Cindy and I have become good friends," said McCain. Besides, a little animosity "never stops anyone from joining into an alliance if they can win," said one analyst. More »

'A Bitter Man Who Clings to His Guns?'

(Newser) - While the Democratic candidates were grinding away at each other last night, some other normally stiff shirts were loosening up at the Radio and Television Correspondents annual dinner in DC. The high points: Dressed in hunting hat and shades (no naked lady), Dick Cheney spoofed Barack Obama’s blue-collar gaffe (“Obviously you’re not the kind to look down on a bitter man who clings to his guns”) and Hillary Clinton’s whiskey shot (“Looked like she replaced Mark Penn with Johnnie Walker.’) More »
