President Bush has a new analogy about the nation's financial meltdown. "There is no question about it. Wall Street got drunk," the president said at a Houston fundraiser after asking audience members to turn off their video cameras. "That's one reason I asked you to turn off your TV cameras. It got drunk and now it's got a hangover. The question is, How long will it [take to] sober up and not try to do all these fancy financial instruments?"

President Bush is nearing the end of his term, and felons are coming out of the woodwork in historic numbers to ask for pardons and reduced sentences, the New York Times reports. It is not unusual for there to be a spike in pardons granted by a president in his final months in office: Half of Bill Clinton’s 459 pardons happened in his last three months.

San Francisco voters will decide in November not only who will succeed President Bush but also how they will remember him. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi lashed out at President Bush in unusually personal terms today, calling him a "total failure" as president. Being a Reagan, Gingrich and Dole soldier won’t stop former Chamber of Commerce honcho Larry Hunter from voting for Barack Obama this fall, he writes in the New York Daily News . It doesn’t matter that he wholly disagrees with the Dem on every point of domestic policy; the chance to close the book on “unjustified war and unconstitutional abridgment of individual rights” is worth the price of “unreconstructed, dyed-in-the-wool, big-government” liberalism.

Climate change will bring longer, hotter, smoggier summers in the coming decades across the US, a new EPA reports says. Expect more wildfires and hurricanes, too, along with water problems in the West, the Washington Post reports. The federal report is noteworthy because it refutes the Bush administration's rosier outlook on global warming, the Post notes.

“What can I say?” writes left-leaning Jonathan Chait in revealing his continued affection for John McCain. “Bush has lowered my standards.” Remember, McCain was once “the country’s foremost progressive champion”—battling the religious right and tax cuts while pushing immigration and anti-global warming advances. And while the old McCain is gone—having tacked hard to the right—Chait clings to an “affinity for the old codger.”

When George Bush denied involvement in infamous smears that ended John McCain's 2000 presidential bid, the feisty senator barked, “Don’t give me that shit. And take your hands off me.” But just 4 years later he gave the somber president a pre-debate pep talk: “You’re gonna be great.” The relationship between the two men has been a rollercoaster of bitter fighting and support, David Carney writes, detailing some of the unknown episodes in Time .

President Bush fondly remembered Tony Snow today, telling mourners at his funeral that the conservative commentator-turned-White House press secretary "amassed a rare record of accomplishment." "He knew the job of a reporter was vigorous. He understood the profession and always treated it with respect," Bush said during a service at Washington's Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception.

With Washington roiled yesterday by economic woes and bad news from Afghanistan, George W. Bush spent an hour watching 6- and 7-year-olds play T-ball, Dana Milbank notes in the Washington Post —the 95th sports-related event he's hosted as president, to 45 cabinet meetings. "For a president facing little good news at the office," Milbank writes, "sport is pleasure."

There are two races for president this year, Michael Tomasky writes in the Guardian , “a race about Barack Obama and a race about what the GOP has done to the country.” And Obama would be well served to turn the focus to John McCain, whose recent gaffes have gone unanswered as the Democrat tries to make people vote for him—and not against his opponent.
