Sox 1 Away From Series Sweep

The Red Sox are one win away from another World Series title, thanks to the heart of their lineup—the 9, 1 and 2 spots—of Daisuke Matsuzaka, Jacoby Ellsbury and Dustin Pedroia. Matsuzaka pitched 5 1/3 solid innings, and together the three scored and drove in nine runs in Boston's 10-5 victory, reports the Boston Herald. More »

      Pedroia Powers Sox Into Series

The smallest guy on the field struck the biggest blows last night as the Red Sox turned a tense ALCS Game 7 into a late-inning laugher. With the Sox leading the Indians 3-2, rookie second baseman Dustin Pedroia hit a 2-run HR in the 7th inning, then a bases-loaded double in the 8th, and Boston cruised into the World Series with an 11-2 win, the team's third straight victory after trailing the series 3-1. Cleveland Pitcher Bought HGH

Paul Byrd, the pitcher who's been critical in the Cleveland Indians' successful playoff run this season, bought almost $25,000 worth of human growth hormone between 2002 and 2005, the San Francisco Chronicle learned today. Byrd admitted taking HGH, but told Fox Sports he was using it legally with a prescription. The Chronicle report, however, says two of Byrd’s prescriptions came from a dentist whose license was suspended in 2003 for fraud. More »

      Drew Slams Sox Past Indians

Curt Schilling pitched seven strong innings last night and the Boston offense came through in a big way to launch the Red Sox over the Indians, 12-2, and force Game 7 of the ALCS, reports the Boston Herald . J.D. Drew set the tone in the first with a two-out grand slam off Cleveland ace Fausto Carmona. More »

    • Beckett Is Boston's Life Support

      Beckett Is Boston's Life Support

It  was do or die for the Red Sox last night, and this time they did. Josh Beckett posted 11 strikeouts and one walk in eight powerful innings, and Kevin Youkilis led a surging Boston offense with a triple and homer, reports the Providence Journal. The 7-1 win keeps the Sox alive in the series, which the Indians lead 3-2. More »

    • Indians Poised to Eliminate Sox

      Indians Poised to Eliminate Sox

The Cleveland Indians moved to within one game of the World Series last night with a 7-3 takedown of the Red Sox, reports the AP. Cleveland's runs came in a breakout fifth inning against knuckleballer Tim Wakefield and reliever Manny Delcarmen. Despite making postseason history two innings later, the Red Sox couldn't avoid falling into a 3-1 series hole. More »

    • Indians Roll Dice For Series Lead

Indians Roll Dice For Series Lead

Daisuke Matsuzaka's second postseason outing for Boston last night went much like his first: he gave up four runs on six hits in 4 2/3 innings. Unlike his last appearance, Matsuzaka got the loss, as Cleveland's Jake Westbrook reigned in the Red Sox for a 4-2 defeat. The Indians now have a 2-1 lead in the best-of-seven series, reports the Providence Journal. More »

    • Rockies Sweep to World Series

      Rockies Sweep to World Series

Apparently having forgotten how to lose a game, the Colorado Rockies completed their sweep of the Arizona Diamondbacks last night with a 6-4 win. The team that was only four games above .500 a month ago is now headed to its first World Series after going 21-1 so far to end a Cinderella season, reports the Rocky Mountain News. More »

    • D-Backs Can't Stop Streaking Rockies

      D-Backs Can't Stop Streaking Rockies

The freight train that is the Rockies didn't lose any steam last night in Colorado, taking the third NLCS game 4-1 to put the Arizona Diamondbacks on the verge of extinction. Only one team has come back from a 3-0 deficit to win a championship series, but the Diamondbacks are determined to "defy history," Justin Upton told the Arizona Republic. More »

    • Rockies Remain Undefeated

      Rockies Remain Undefeated

The Colorado Rockies held on to their postseason win streak last night courtesy of Arizona closer Jose Valverde, who walked in the winning run with two out in the 11th. The Diamondbacks put up a good fight, tying the game in the ninth and outhitting the Rockies, but the return of Willy Taveras spelled doom for Arizona, reports the Denver Post . More »

    • Red Sox Cruise Behind Beckett

      Red Sox Cruise Behind Beckett

Game 1 of the ALCS did not prove to be the pitching duel between Cy Young candidates that many had expected, as the Red Sox battered Cleveland starter C.C. Sabathia en-route to a 10-3 victory, the Providence Journal reports. Sabathia was rocked for eight runs in four and a third innings, while Josh Beckett coasted through six, giving up two runs on four hits. More »

    • Colorado Starts Strong Against Arizona

      Colorado Starts Strong Against Arizona

The Colorado Rockies rode Jeff Francis' solid pitching performance to a win last night, their first in the NLCS against Arizona and their 18th in 19 games. Francis allowed one run in 6 2/3 innings in a game that Diamondback fans delayed in the 7th by throwing debris onto the field to protest a call, reports the Rocky Mountain News. More »

    • Indians Send Yankees Home

      Indians Send Yankees Home

The Cleveland Indians took Game 4 of the ALDS, defeating the Yankees 6-4 last night to advance to the ALCS, reports the AP. While the Indians have their eye on their first World Series title since 1948, questions consume the Bronx: Will Joe Torre get the ax? Can the Yanks afford to keep their free agents? And where was Alex Rodriguez throughout this series? More »

Angels Fall as Sox Sweep ALDS

Curt Schilling pitched seven shutout innings as his teammates put together a 9-1 thrashing of the Angels yesterday to sweep the American League Division Series, the Boston Globe reports. • Steinbrenner to Torre: Win or You're Fired

Steinbrenner to Torre: Win or You're Fired

Joe Torre is one loss away from unemployment. Last night George Steinbrenner told the Bergen County Record the skipper is finished in New York unless the Yankees rally to beat the Cleveland Indians. “He's the highest-paid manager in baseball, so I don't think we'd take him back if we don't win this series,” Steinbrenner said, in a vintage threat-filled rant. Winter Starts Now For Cubs

The Arizona Diamondbacks ensured another year without a Cubs championship title last night, shutting down Chicago 5-1 for a sweep of the National League Division Series. • Yankees Stung at Cleveland

      Yankees Stung at Cleveland

The Indians lead the Yankees 2-0 in their ALDS series, following Friday night's 11-inning victory. A game which saw phenomenal pitching from starters Pettitte and Carmona  is destined to become famous for the insect swarm that arrived in the later innings. The pests certainly got to Yankee reliever Joba Chamberlain, who gave up a game tying run on a wild pitch in the eighth. More »

    • Indians Rout Yanks in Game 1

Indians Rout Yanks in Game 1

Anchored by a gutsy C.C. Sabathia performance, the Indians beat the heavily favored Yankees 12-3 to take a 1-0 series lead.  Sabathia walked six and needed 114 pitches to go 5 innings, but it was enough to get the win, particularly with Asdrubal Cabrera, Victor Martinez, Travis Hafner and Ryan Garko all homering to back him. Diamondbacks Take 2-0 Series Lead

Red Sox Clinch Best Record in Baseball

J.D. Drew's clutch home run last night secured Boston's 6-4 victory over the Twins, which in turn ensured that the Red Sox will go down as having the top regular-season record in 2007. This distinction allowed the Sox to choose the longer, 8-day schedule for their playoff series against the Angels, reports MLB.com. More »
