This year's roster of eight teams was a mix of regular participants (Yankees, Red Sox, Angels), historic franchises trying to overcome years of heartbreak (Cubs, Indians, Phillies), and two young upstart squads (Diamondbacks, Rockies)

      (Newser) - Red Sox ace Josh Beckett won his 20th game last night, pulling Boston out of a four-game losing streak and becoming the first pitcher to reach 20 wins since 2005. The 27-year-old Cy Young contender struck out eight and gave up one run in six innings in Boston's 8-1 win over Tampa Bay, reports the Boston Globe . More »

      (Newser) - Thanks to a Brewers' loss and a gutsy performance by Ted Lilly, the Cubs took sole possession of first place in the National League Central. Lilly, pitching on short rest, allowed just two runs and five hits against the Reds.  The Cubs won the game in the 8th on Matt Murton's pinch-hit fielder's choice that scored Ryan Theriot.   More »

      (Newser) - Last night's win over the Tigers was the Cleveland Indians' 20th in 25 games, raising them to a tie with Boston for the best record in baseball, and taking them one step closer to clinching the American League Central division title. Indians ace C.C. Sabathia improved to 18-7, and closer Joe Borowski notched his league-leading 42nd save, reports the AP. More »

Though starters Jake Westbrook and Nate Robertson pitched shutouts through eight innings, Tigers closer Joel Zumaya surrendered three hits to Victor Martinez, Kenny Lofton and Chris Gomez to hand the tribe a 10th-inning win.       (Newser) - After dropping the first of a two-game series, the Indians bested the Tigers last night 5-2, tying Detroit for the top spot in the American League Central division. The Indian's Fausto Carmona fanned a career-best 10 batters on the way to his 14th victory, with ace closer Joe Borowski recording his 33rd save in 37 outings. More »

      (Newser) - In a showdown between two of the best lefties in baseball, Cleveland's C.C. Sabathia edged out Johan Santana of Minnesota for a 5-2 win, as the Indians took a half-game lead over the Tigers in the AL Central. Center fielder Grady Sizemore hit his 19th homer and drove in 4 RBIs. "As Grady goes, so we go," Sabathia said. More »

      (Newser) - The AL-leading Red Sox stuck it to the Indians, 4-2, as Josh Beckett continues the best season-opening run by a Boston pitcher since Roger Clemens started 14-0 in 1986. Beckett had spent 15 days on the disabled list with an irritated middle finger, but mystified Cleveland to the tune of three hits and two runs in seven innings. More »
