The Full Monty

Naked or nude? Erotic or obscene? The human body is a subject of debate, excitement, desire, and occasional digust

Art and nudity share a long history. Beginning with the Cycladic idols, and throughout the Greek and Roman periods, the naked human form was widely drawn, painted, carved, and admired. But it disappeared from public art until the Renaissance, the victim of a prudish Catholic Church and the rise of an even stricter Islam which banned any depiction of the human form. In recent years, artists have carried the obsession to ever more creative heights, as in the work of Spencer Tunick, whose photographs of nude crowds in major cities worldwide have earned him a kind of naked glory.
