Obama Readies Major Speech on Race

(Newser) - Barack Obama will deliver a major speech on race and politics in America in Philadelphia this morning. Obama: Can He Make White Men Jump?

(Newser) - White men have become key swing voters in the Democratic race, the Washington Post reports, and Barack Obama has failed to woo them. His success with the subset in Wisconsin and Virginia was a major breakthrough, pundits say, but he couldn't make white men jump in Texas and Ohio—turning the crucial states to Hillary Clinton and reviving her campaign. Firebrand Pastor Worried Obama Campaign Early

(Newser) - Barack Obama’s campaign uninvited his controversial former pastor Jeremiah Wright from speaking at his candidacy announcement last year, reports the Los Angeles Times . The campaign didn’t want to "make him the target and a distraction on a day when Senator Obama was going to announce his candidacy," said David Axelrod, the candidate's chief strategist. Obama waited until last week before formally distancing himself from the head of Chicago's Trinity United Church of Christ. More »

Olbermann Rips Clinton Over Ferraro Flap

(Newser) - If Keith Olbermann is the Rush Limbaugh of the left—as Chris Cillizza observes in his Washington Post Fix blog—Hillary Clinton couldn’t have been happy when Olbermann blasted her Wednesday night over the recent Geraldine Ferraro flap. “You are now campaigning as if Barack Obama were the Democrat and you were the Republican,” he said. Obama Preacher's Words Keep Resurfacing

(Newser) - In the latest campaign preacher flap, TV networks are airing clips from sermons in which the former pastor of Barack Obama's church condemns "racist" US society and compares the candidate's experiences to Jesus' struggles, the Guardian reports. "God damn America for treating our citizens as less than human," said the fiery pastor who presided over Obama's marriage, baptized his kids, and provided the title of his biography. He also once described the 9/11 attacks as "America's chickens coming home to roost." More »

      Ferraro Quits Clinton Post

(Newser) - Geraldine Ferraro left her honorary post in the Clinton campaign today amid turmoil over her comment that if Barack Obama were white, "he would not be in this position." Ferraro stands by that assertion but says the Obama camp has twisted her remarks out of context. "I am stepping down from your finance committee so I can speak for myself and you can continue to speak for yourself," she wrote Clinton. More »

(Newser) - The continuing squabbling between the Democratic presidential candidates is taking a toll within the party and dividing groups considered crucial to a victory in November, polls show—even as more Republicans are lining up behind John McCain, the Wall Street Journal reports. Ferraro: Obama Camp Crying Racism Again

(Newser) - Despite charges of racism from the Barack Obama camp, former vice presidential candidate Geraldine Ferraro yesterday refused to back off earlier comments  that the candidate is enjoying a campaign advantage because of his race. "Every time that campaign is upset about something, they call it racist,” snipped Ferrro. “I will not be discriminated against because I’m white. If they think they’re going to shut up Geraldine Ferraro with that kind of stuff, they don’t know me." More »

      Are Black Immigrants Black?

(Newser) - The notion that a black American must be a “descendant of West African slaves brought here to labor for whites against their will” just reinforces the “invisibility that black immigrants face in America,” Debra Dickerson writes in Mother Jones . But she can’t escape it herself, she admits; she has said that Barack Obama isn’t black, endorsing “a politico-cultural reality which I reject.” More »

Attack Teflon Barack, and You'll Be Sorry

(Newser) - Barack Obama has accepted a lot of apologies this election cycle, and each has made the Democrat stronger, notes Politico writer Ben Smith. From Joe Biden’s “articulate and … clean” gaffe to Bill Cunningham’s attempts to accent his middle name, opponents are always stepping over a line with Obama, and with every apology he appears more gracious, rising above the fray—and foes. 'Black Geniuses' Remark is OK

(Newser) - The presidential race is so odd that Geraldo Rivera has pondered "black geniuses" on Fox—which was “absurd in a way that’s new and refreshing," Eugene Robinson writes in the Washington Post . Rivera was talking about Barack Obama and Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick last week on "Fox and Friends" when he said, "It's almost as if they went to a camp where these black geniuses got together," Rivera said. What's White and White and Read All Over?

(Newser) - When a twentysomething writer launched a satirical blog called "Stuff White People Like" 6 weeks ago, he didn't expect an overwhelming response, and he certainly didn't expect to average 300,000 hits a day. The blog was intended to mock the way the media stereotypes ethnicities, but not all of its readers seem to be in on the joke, the LA Times reports. More »
