About me:
Vietnam Veteran, Former partner in Political (Republican) PR Firm (Creative Image Services), Former state Employment Services Dep. Commissioner, Former Roman Catholic seminarian, Former Educator (B.S., M.S.,Ed.D.). Now no longer a Republican voter; now a staunch Atheist; now a philosophical Hedonist; now an avowed, proud and unabashed Elitist. Retired since 1996. ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- WHAT I BELIEVE [as stated by others before me]: "America is great because it is good, and if America ever ceases to be good, America will cease to be great." -- Woodrow Wilson "Religion is the opiate of the masses." -- Karl Marx "Believe nothing just because a so-called wise person said it. Believe nothing just because a belief is generally held. Believe nothing just because it is said in ancient books. Believe nothing just because it is said to be of divine origin. Believe nothing just because someone else believes it. Believe only what you yourself test and judge to be true." --- Buddha "The great enemy of the truth is very often not the lie -- deliberate, contrived and dishonest -- but the myth -- persistent, persuasive and unrealistic" ---JFK "All tyranny needs to gain a foothold is for people of good conscience to remain silent." --- Thomas Jefferson "War will never cease until babies begin to come into the world with larger cerebrums and smaller adrenal glands." ---H. L. Mencken "Anyone who has ever looked into the glazed eyes of a soldier dying on the battlefield will think long and hard before starting a war."-- Otto von Bismarck "Intolerance is itself a form of violence and an obstacle to the growth of a true democratic spirit."--- Mohandas Gandhi "At times our own light goes out and is rekindled by a spark from another person. Each of us has cause to think with deep gratitude of those who have lighted the flame within us."---Albert Schweitzer. "We have nothing to fear but fear itself." - FDR. ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- ATHEISM & IT’S COMPARISON TO THE BELIEF IN GOD: Atheism explains that morality is a social obligation but not a passport to heaven and salvation. The theistic belief in divine retribution sidetracked moral behavior. Believers were more prone to please the god of their imagination by prayer and ritual than to conform to rules of moral conduct. Consequently immorality and anti-social activities spread wild wherever people were absorbed in the worship of god and in the propitiation of fate. Atheism brings about radical changes in the outlook of people in this context. Truth, tolerance, love and equality are the basic needs of social harmony. Membership of society imposes on everyone the obligation of their observance now and here. Transgressions should be checked and punished by public opinion and mutual control, since immorality on the part of anyone disturbs the happiness of everyone involved in the social relation. The indirect method of encouraging morality through hope and fear of requital in the other world lent itself to much abuse, especially when the concept of the other-world was exposed to be a big hoax. So atheism which bases morality on social obligation and self-discipline and which controls violations with persuasion and pressure of satyagraha, ensures ethical behavior more definitely and reliably than religious faith could. --- Unknown
