Signalling a no-holds-barred fight ahead, Mitt Romney is standing by the use of an out-of-context quote from President Obama in his first TV ad. The ad—slammed by Democrats and called "ridiculously misleading" by non-partisan campaign watchdog Politifact—features Obama saying, "If we keep talking about the economy, we’re going to lose," without mentioning that he was quoting John McCain's campaign in 2008.

Romney told reporters that his campaign had issued a press release explaining that the words came from Obama's opponent. "There was no hidden effort on the part of our campaign. It was instead to point out that what's sauce for the goose is now sauce for the gander," he said. "This ad points out, now, guess what, it's your turn. The same lines used on John McCain are now going to be used on you, which is that this economy is going to be your albatross." (More John McCain stories.)
