Amazon is opening up a new front in its battle with Apple and Google. With help from Foxconn, the firm is developing its own smartphone, insiders tell Bloomberg. Alongside the Kindle Fire, the phone would offer a cheaper alternative to yet another popular Apple product, and would also compete with Android phones. The online retailer is already gathering patents to protect itself against potential infringement claims—and recently hired a new patents chief, Bloomberg notes. (More Amazon stories.)
