Former first dog Barney Bush, famous for his "Barney Cam" tours of the White House and for occasionally chomping on a reporter, has died. George W. Bush and Laura Bush say their famous 12-year-old pooch had lymphatic cancer. The Barney video tradition started in 2002: With public access to the White House more restricted in the aftermath of 9/11, Laura Bush sent Barney out to prowl the building with the camera. The 4.5-minute tour of holiday decorations was such a hit that his movies became an annual feature for the rest of Bush's presidency.

"Barney was by my side during our eight years in the White House," said the former president. "He never discussed politics and was always a faithful friend. Laura and I will miss our pal." (More dog stories.)
