Not willing to spend up to 98% of your income on housing in states like California or Hawaii? A ghost town in desperate need of humanity might be the best affordable option. Based on vacant property rates per zip code, 24/7 Wall St. rounds up 30 ghost towns across the country. Most, it turns out, are still suffering the effects of the Great Recession and have violent crime rates higher than the national average. The upside: home prices are generally rock bottom. The top 10 towns, with their percentage of vacant properties:

1. Gary, Ind. (ZIP 46409): 30.3%
2. Gary, Ind. (46407): 29.6%
3. Gary, Ind. (46402): 29.5%
4. Flint, Mich. (48505): 29%
5. Youngstown, Ohio (44507): 26%

6. Hilton Head Island, SC (29928): 25.9%
7. Montgomery, Ala. (36104): 24.6%
8. Indian Rocks Beach, Fla. (33785): 23.5%
9. Shenandoah, Penn. (17976): 21.5%
10. Manitou Beach, Mich. (49253): 20.9%
