(Newser) – President Trump once again tweeted about Hillary Clinton's emails, though this time with a twist: He claimed she was hacked by China. As some media outlets noted, Trump put forth no evidence backing his claim in the the tweets, made roughly two hours apart. They read:

  • First: "Report just out: 'China hacked Hillary Clinton's private Email Server.' Are they sure it wasn't Russia (just kidding!)? What are the odds that the FBI and DOJ are right on top of this? Actually, a very big story. Much classified information!"
  • Then: "Hillary Clinton's Emails, many of which are Classified Information, got hacked by China. Next move better be by the FBI & DOJ or, after all of their other missteps (Comey, McCabe, Strzok, Page, Ohr, FISA, Dirty Dossier etc.), their credibility will be forever gone!"

The Hill notes the tweets came on the heels of a Monday report from the Daily Caller that made the China claim based on unnamed intelligence sources. Per the Caller, the hack was uncovered in 2015 and allegedly used the following ruse: A Virginia-based company (and not a technology one) that acted as a front for the Chinese government and inserted a line of code into Clinton's server that sent a "courtesy copy" of each of her emails to China. Fox News notes it's unclear whether Trump's tweets were based on the Caller report or "after learning about new intelligence." China commented broadly. A rep for the Chinese Foreign Ministry didn't mention Trump or Clinton specifically but brushed off the accusations as similar to ones China has heard before and reiterated the country's opposition to such internet attacks, per Reuters.
