If you're going to fork over close to $50,000 a year to go to college—the top-end average for tuition, room, and board at a four-year school—you want the best ROI on your money. WalletHub looked at close to 1,000 of America's higher-education venues, examining a few dozen metrics across seven categories, including cost and financing, campus safety, and educational and career outcomes—in other words, whether students ended up walking down the aisle in their caps and gowns, and how they landed in the real world afterward. Read on for WalletHub's top 10 colleges that will get you the most bang for your buck:

  1. Massachusetts Institute of Technology (ranked No. 1 in "Career Outcomes" category)
  2. Princeton University
  3. Yale (ranked No. 1 in "Educational Outcomes" category)
  4. Harvard University
  5. California Institute of Technology (ranked No. 1 in "Student Selectivity" and "Faculty Resources" categories)
  6. Duke University
  7. University of Pennsylvania
  8. Columbia University
