Jesse Matthew Jr. is serving four life sentences for murdering two young women in Charlottesville, Va. Now comes a twist the mother of one of his victims thinks might be "karma"—CBS 6 reports that the 37-year-old has stage 4 colon cancer. Matthews himself told the station of a cancer diagnosis in an interview earlier this month, though he didn't elaborate about the type. The details come from the mother of victim Morgan Harrington. “I'm not gleeful that he has this health challenge, but I'm not saddened by it,” Gil Harrington tells NBC 29. “And perhaps it’s his fate or his destiny or his karma—I'm OK with what happens to him as long as he has been and will be contained.”

A stage-4 diagnosis means the cancer has spread, and Matthew has been transferred from a super-maximum security prison in the state to an undisclosed facility south of Richmond for treatment. Matthew pleaded guilty in 2016 to killing Morgan Harrington and University of Virginia student Hannah Graham, and it was the latter woman's death that led to Matthew's capture. In his interview with the TV station, Matthew was asked whether he was sorry. "I don’t think I can answer that question right now truthfully," he responded. "Maybe in another interview." (The Virginia murders weren't the only crimes committed by Matthew.)
