A group of friends say they were ignored by Border Patrol agents while trying to deliver $340 worth of diapers, soap, and toys to a Texas facility where migrant children were said to be going without. Austin Savage, one of the group of six, says the lobby of the facility in Clint was locked Sunday, and that between eight to 10 agents who were milling about near a parking facility were of no help, per the Texas Tribune. He adds his wasn't the only offer of assistance to be refused, as a plastic bag containing toothpaste and soap and a note that the supplies were "for kids" was discarded near the lobby door.
"Knowing what's happening in your community and that you can't give these kids supplies to clean or clothe themselves—it's heartbreaking," says Clint native Gabriel Acuna, who also visited the facility. Democratic state Rep. Terry Canales expressed similar outrage after Border Patrol told him that it doesn't accept donations. "The whole situation is disgusting," he said, though he noted the head Border Patrol agent of the Rio Grande Valley Sector had promised to get back to him about "how we can collaborate." Savage said he would return to the facility with his haul, though most children have now been moved, per the Hill. (More on that here.)
