GMA Host Advised to 'Wake Up' After She Teases Prince About Ballet

Lara Spencer found herself in hot water Thursday over a Good Morning America segment in which she discussed what Prince George of Cambridge will be doing during Year 2 at his London school, Thomas's Battersea. The curriculum includes ballet, and as Spencer read that part, her co-hosts and the audience could be heard laughing. "He looks so happy about the ballet class," Spencer joked as photos of George, who turned 6 last month, flashed onscreen. She continued, "Prince William says George absolutely loves ballet. I have news for you Prince William: We’ll see how long that lasts." Outrage quickly followed, with many wondering how Spencer could think it's OK to make such "bullying" comments in 2019, and she apologized on Instagram Friday, the Week reports.

"My sincere apologies for an insensitive comment I made in pop news yesterday. From ballet to anything one wants to explore in life, I say GO FOR IT. I fully believe we should all be free to pursue our passions. Go climb your mountain-and love every minute of it," Spencer wrote. However, some were less than impressed: "Dear @GMA ... I find @LaraSpencer response to be insensitive and her apology a cop out. Not good enough for me... is it good enough for you?? This statement needs to be made on air in the same forum she so freely judged and criticized," tweeted Broadway actress Shoshana Bean. People rounds up more of the criticism, which is worth reading: Dancers Derek Hough and Travis Wall, for example, reflected on how the incident reminded them of bullying they endured growing up. "Wake up. It’s 2019. Get with the program," Wall captioned his video message. "Please share and repost this so a boy who needs to see this feels supported if he dances or wants to!"
