Michelle Carter, behind bars for involuntary manslaughter after she encouraged her boyfriend to kill himself, was hoping to get out of prison early. The 22-year-old appeared before a Massachusetts parole board Thursday to make her case, but BuzzFeed News reports that her request was denied. Carter has served 7 months of her 15-month sentence. Despite a rep from the Bristol County Sheriff noting Carter has been a "model inmate," the parole board said on Friday that Carter's "self-serving statements and behavior" before and after Conrad Roy's suicide in 2014 "appear to be irrational and lacked sincerity," adding it was "troubled" by her actions.

The board also noted Carter "actively prevented others in intervening in [Roy's] suicide," in addition to encouraging him to take his own life. "She was a perfect candidate to obtain parole," her attorney said Friday, adding the "parole board's decision is based on the incorrect and dangerous legal ruling" by the Massachusetts courts that kept her conviction in place, per NBC News. He noted she'll probably still get out a bit ahead of her March 13, 2020, release date, thanks to points earned for good behavior. Her lawyers have appealed to the Supreme Court to hear her case.
