The no-host, three-hour 71st annual Emmy Awards kicked off at 8pm ET Sunday, with Ben Stiller handing out the first award for best supporting actor in a comedy series to Tony Shalhoub for The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel—after a chat with Bob Newhart. Presenters included Lin-Manuel Miranda, Hugh Laurie, Maya Rudolph, and Jon Hamm. Actor-comedian Thomas Lennon has the off-camera job of regaling viewers with factoids and jokes as winners head to the stage. The other winners:

  • Best supporting actress in a comedy series: Alex Borstein, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel
  • Writing for a comedy series: Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Fleabag
  • Director in a comedy series: Harry Bradbeer, Fleabag
  • Lead actor in a comedy series: Bill Hader, Barry
  • Lead actress in a comedy series: Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Fleabag (denying Veep star Julia Louis-Dreyfus her seventh Emmy for that show in a major upset)
  • Competition program: RuPaul's Drag Race
  • Supporting actress in limited series: Patricia Arquette, The Act
  • Director in a limited series: Johan Renck, Chernobyl
  • Supporting actor in limited series: Ben Whishaw, A Very English Scandal
  • Writing in a limited series: Craig Mazin, Chernobyl
  • Best actor in a limited series: Jharrel Jerome, When They See Us
  • Television movie: Black Mirror, Bandersnatch
  • Lead actress in a limited series: Michelle Williams, Fosse/Verdon
  • Limited series: Chernobyl

  • Best writing in a variety series: The team from Last Week Tonight With John Oliver
  • Best variety sketch series: Saturday Night Live
  • Directing variety series: Don Roy King, Saturday Night Live
  • Best variety talk series: Last Week Tonight With John Oliver
  • Best supporting actor in a drama series: Peter Dinklage, Game of Thrones (the Los Angeles Times reports it's his fourth win in the category, a record)
  • Writing for a drama series: Jesse Armstrong, Succession
  • Best supporting actress in a drama series: Julia Garner, Ozark
  • Best actor in a drama series: Billy Porter, Pose (he's the first openly gay black man to win the award, notes the Los Angeles Times)
  • Directing in a drama series: Jason Bateman, Ozark (his 7th nomination and first win)
  • Best actress in a drama series: Jodie Comer, Killing Eve
  • Best comedy series: Fleabag
  • Best drama series: Game of Thrones
