The parents of a British teen killed in an Aug. 27 crash involving a US diplomat's wife said they had no plans to meet the woman during their visit stateside. Indeed, they said they'd been advised against such a meeting unless Anne Sacoolas returned to the UK for police questioning, per the Daily Beast. But President Trump had other plans: He invited Charlotte Charles and Tim Dunn to the White House on Tuesday, offered his condolences in the Oval Office, then announced that Sacoolas was in the next room, ready to be ushered in. "We were a bit shocked" but adamant that such a meeting was "not appropriate" as there were several photographers, but no mediators or therapists, present, Charles later told reporters, per the Guardian.

"We didn't want to be railroaded into, not a circus as such, but into a meeting we weren't prepared for," Dunn adds, per the BBC. Still, he says Trump offered "sincere" condolences, and even held Charles' hand, per the Guardian. "Upon … ending the meeting, I said, 'If it was your 19-year-old son, or your son no matter what age, you would be doing the same as me.' And he actually grabbed hold of my hand little bit tighter and he said, 'Yes, I would be,'" says Charles, who was left with a "tiny little bit of hope that he will take another look and maybe work harder for us." The parents—who plan to ask for a suspended sentence for Sacoolas if she returns to the UK and is convicted in a trial—are still interested to know who allowed her to return to the US claiming diplomatic immunity, and when.
